'Penny Lane Is Dead' Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Is Penny Actually Dead?

Mia Kate Russell’s Australian horror flick Penny Lane Is Dead is a bloody, gory affair! Inspired by 80s slasher horrors, the film is disturbing, entertaining, and campy. As the title already suggests, the film is centered around Penny Lane and her friends. The year is 1986, Penny is at her family beach house, ready to host a party for her friends before leaving for university to study law. She’d planned to invite Toni and Amy, and although her cousin, Kat, knew that she was in town, she didn’t expect her to show up. You get the idea that no one really likes Kat; even Penny’s mother tells her that she must stay away from her cousin. She believes there’s something odd about Kat, and that her company is bad for her daughter. While Penny is confident that Kat won’t show up, we witness Kat prepare drug-laced cupcakes for the party, ready to mess with her cousin, but the question is, how far will she go?

Long story short, Kat crashes the party, as expected, and she encourages Penny, Toni, and Amy to try her cupcakes. She has one herself, and the rest follow in her footsteps. Soon after having the cupcake, Penny starts to feel sick, after which she crashes on the sofa and falls asleep. Toni is extremely upset with Kat, and she asks her to leave. Kat doesn’t express any remorse for what she’s done, she feels rather proud of herself because she believes that Penny deserves to suffer, since she is always the center of everyone’s attention. Toni and Penny are in love, and that very day, Penny had asked Toni if she would like to move in with her at the one-bedroom apartment her mother had gotten her close to her university, and Toni immediately showed interest. So, quite obviously, Toni deeply cares about Penny, and she hates the fact that Kat showed up unannounced and drugged Penny just to mess with her. All Penny wanted was to party with her best friends, but clearly Kat refused to let her enjoy her day. 

Kat evidently hates Penny, and she won’t leave without a fight. She contacts her criminal lover, and asks him to pick her up from this beach house in the middle of nowhere. Soon, the men arrive, and they demand to enter the house. Toni completely freaks out; these are men in their 40s (or above) with criminal records, so there’s no way she can let them in. But the men are persistent, aggressively stating that they need to make a call, and if she doesn’t open the door, then there’ll be a problem. Toni figures if she allows them to make the call, maybe they’ll leave. But that doesn’t happen; Kat’s boyfriend, Agnus, is extremely messed up, and when he sees a picture of Penny on the wall he expresses his desire to force himself on her. Although Toni mentions that the girl in question is just sixteen, that doesn’t bother the men. In an attempt to protect Penny, Toni flirts with Agnus, hoping that it’ll be enough reason for Kat to leave with the men, but Kat is sick to the core, and to seek revenge on Toni and Penny, she tells her boyfriend that Penny is in the bedroom. She encourages Agnus to rape Penny, and takes pictures of the abuse. When Penny regains consciousness, she completely loses her mind. She screams out loud and tries to walk away, but Agnus, Merrick, and Rodowsky figure that they can’t just let her go. Kat repeatedly tells Agnus how Penny has always wronged her, she blames Penny’s overachieving nature for her downfall, and she accuses her of being a liar. Frustrated with the constant nagging, Agnus strikes Penny with a shovel, and she collapses to the ground. She bleeds profusely, and it is assumed that she is dead. 

Amy has been hiding under a bush all this time. She has witnessed Penny’s murder, and she is petrified after seeing Penny’s bloodied face. Penny is dead, Toni has sneaked out of the beach house to get help, and Amy is stuck under a bush with nowhere to go. She figures she has to do something, so when she thinks the coast is clear, she tries to grab hold of a bicycle and leave. But unfortunately, Kat catches her in the act. Amy, the sweet soft-spoken girl in the group, begs Kat to come along with her. She hopes that Kat’ll realize that she is stuck with a psycho criminal, but Kat declines her offer. She isn’t a damsel in distress who needs saving; she wants to believe that she is in control of the entire situation, and when Agnus steps out of the house, she points him to Amy. Amy tries to cycle as fast as she can, but it’s an impossible challenge, and she ultimately ditches the bicycle and decides to run. But Agnus ultimately catches up with her. She is terrified that he’ll rape her, just as he’s done to Penny, and she tells him how she is disgusted by him. Agnus simply pulls out his gun and shoots Amy. 

Toni drives to the bottle store, hoping to find help, but the store is closed and she can already hear Rodowsky arriving in his car. Rodowsky is deeply upset with Toni; she’d dared to strike him with a heavy object on his head and run away from the beach house. He searches the store, hoping to find her, but he fails. He steps out and waits by his car, still trying his best to predict her next move, when suddenly, Toni chops off his feet with a sharp sword that she’d found at the bottle store. She had been waiting patiently under Rodowsky’s car to attack him at the right time. Rodowsky quite obviously can’t get back on his feet, but he still manages to grab hold of Toni by the neck. She ultimately slashes his chest, and blood starts oozing out of the deep wound. She leaves him to die and decides to run back home; since Rodowsky had already thrown away her car keys, that’s the only option she has left. When she arrives at the beach house, she notices Merrick touching Penny’s body, and she immediately attacks him with her sharp sword. He screams in pain, and Angus rushes out of the house and holds Toni at gunpoint. He’s ready to kill her, but Kat decides to deal with Toni instead. Toni’s hands and legs are bound, and Kat repeatedly punches and kicks her for the thrill of it. Her attention shifts when Nick from the bottle store arrives at the house. Kat tries to keep him away, but when Nick hears Toni scream and ask him to leave, he figures something is really wrong. Kat has a massive crush on Nick; she’d been so obsessed with him that he’d had to get a restraining order against her. So, when Angus threatened to shoot Nick, Kat begged him to stop. But will a psycho killer ever care about one’s emotions? Angus pulls the trigger without any hesitation, and Kat watches the man she has been completely smitten by drop dead. 

In the meantime, Merrick passes his dagger to Toni, since he’s frustrated with Angus and he believes that he deserves to die. Merrick and Rodowsky work for Angus’ father, a big-shot criminal. They had a simple delivery job that night, but because of Angus and his antics, he’s stuck in this remote beach house. He knows he’s probably going to bleed to death, so nothing is really stopping him from killing Angus. Although Toni is the one who attacked him, he doesn’t mind helping her, if it means getting to watch Angus die. Toni manages to free herself, and she successfully grabs Angus’ gun and shoots him in the groin. She hands Merrick the dagger and he throws it right at Angus’ chest. The mad killer dies, and Kat decides to seek revenge immediately. 

Kat and Toni keep chasing and hiding from each other. At one moment, Kat takes charge and repeatedly stabs Toni. In the next, Toni dominates, she punches Kat with barbed wire wrapped around her knuckles, and creatively uses a cheese grater on her face. Kat soon gains control again and pushes Toni off her body. She knocks her out with a kick, and when Toni regains consciousness, she discovers that Kat has tied a noose around her neck, and that’s how she plans to kill her. Toni is helpless; as the noose tightens, she chokes and becomes unconscious. 

In Penny Lane Is Dead’s ending, when Kat assumes that she is the winner of the night, Penny strikes her from behind with a shovel (probably the same one that was used to “kill” her). Yes, Penny is alive, and she has come to rescue her lover. She removes the noose from Toni’s neck, and soon she opens her eyes and is elated to see Penny alive. But just when they think the worst is over, Kat comes back with the shovel and hits Penny with it. Well, this time, the blow isn’t impactful enough, and Penny gets back on her feet and punches Kat in the face. Given Kat’s condition, the powerful punch immediately knocks her out. Penny offers Toni a cigarette (they’d shared a smoke before things got this intense!), and the two enjoy the quiet moment together, with Kat’s body lying in front of them. They’ve been through a hell of a night! 

Although Penny had punched Kat hard enough to knock her out, she hadn’t killed her. Before Toni and Penny rode off into the sunrise on a bike, they fixed Kat to a table with two knives stabbed on both her palms, making it impossible for her to move without hurting herself. It’s very obvious that Penny Lane Is Dead is not a film that’s meant to be taken seriously, or else Penny Lane wouldn’t have survived! I loved her heroic entry; the fact that it’s so predictable makes it so much more fun to watch. At the core of the film is a sweet love story, so it’s only fair that Toni and Penny get their happily ever after. The sunrise signifies their new beginning, away from all the madness. The night was rough, but they also learned how deeply they care about each other, and that’s reason enough for them to plan a future together. Surely, Penny’s mother will be shocked to see dead bodies in her house, I guess the moment she sees Kat, she’ll know that she had something to do with the mess. If cops arrive at the scene, they’ll arrest Kat; it also looks like Merrick is still alive, so he’ll likely end up in prison. Perhaps Toni and Penny will share their side of the story and help the cops figure out what had happened the previous night. Kat will forever be envious of Penny; she’s someone who won’t ever realize her mistake. Because of her obsessive, envious nature, she never really had friends or anyone to give her attention, so when a 40-something criminal with a muscular physique gave her some importance, she was completely smitten. Being with him made her feel powerful and indestructible, and she thought he was someone worth showing off to Penny and her friends, because they would’ve never dared to be with such dangerous men. There were moments when Kat realized that Angus didn’t really value her, and just like everyone else, he too didn’t pay her close attention, which moved her to tears. But that didn’t really change her personality, she was ready to make the compromise as long as she could be a part of his big bad dangerous circle. So, even if Kat ends up in prison, she’ll forever hold Penny responsible for it, and who knows, one day, when she’s released, maybe she will track down Penny and Toni and seek revenge!
