U Mobile eager to work with CelcomDigi and TM to build second 5G network, to reduce foreign majority shareholding to 20%

U Mobile has expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government for selecting them to implement Malaysia’s second 5G network. This comes after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced U Mobile as the winner of the second 5G network tender where four telcos have submitted their applications.

U Mobile to work with CelcomDigi, TM and Huawei for second 5G network

In a statement released today, U Mobile said it is excited to collaborate with various stakeholders, including the MCMC and other telecommunications companies such as CelcomDigi and Telekom Malaysia to deliver world-class 5G Advanced services to consumers.

The orange telco added that it has been proactively engaging with leading global technology providers including Huawei and it will continue to work with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to ensure consumers can continue to enjoy the best 5G experience.

U Mobile to reduce foreign majority shareholding to 20%

As part of its commitment to the national agenda, U Mobile says it will be reducing its foreign majority shareholding to 20%. This is to ensure greater Malaysian control and invite participation from local investors.

Based on the latest SSM data, U Mobile is currently half-owned by Singapore-based Straits Mobile Investments Pte Ltd which holds a 48.3% stake in the orange telco. This is followed by DYMM Agong Sultan Ibrahim holding 22.3%, Magnum Berhad at 7.8%, Singer (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd at 6.1% and U Telemedia Sdn Bhd at 5.6%.

U Mobile says it is well-positioned for the second 5G network rollout

U Mobile says that it has a proven track record spanning more than 17 years and they are well-positioned to implement the second 5G network rollout. It stated that U Mobile subscribers consume the most 5G capacity in the country compared to other telcos.

It added that their continuous investment in the network expansion has allowed them to be the first in the country to provide unlimited data and they are committed to replicating their success for years to come.
