A BRUTAL case of a car driver purposely running over a stray dog at Jalan Stampin in Kuching city has sparked outrage among animal lovers as well as Sarawak DAP politicians.
Animal welfare groups and individuals have lodged police reports over the cruel act that was caught on CCTV and viralled over social media.
Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen and his special assistant Michael Kong accompanied animal lovers to lodge the police reports at several locations in Kuching.
Chong, in a press statement, said the case is believed to have happened a few days ago.
CCTV video footage showed the driver of a saloon car speeding and running over a stray dog deliberately while it was trying to cross a road.
It showed the car running over the stray twice.
The dog died shortly after.
Chong said it is heart-wrenching that such cruelty against animals is still rampant even in Sarawak.
"This incident is a stark reminder that such cruelty still exists in our society in Sarawak.
"The national Animal Welfare Act must be extended to Sarawak soonest as the laws in this state are not adequate to protect animals.
"We demand justice and demand that the culprit be punished severely.
"Such brutal inhumane acts cannot be accepted," he said.
PAWS of Hope Malaysia in Kuching has also lodged a police report over the incident. - January 20, 2025
