KUCHING, May 22: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) through its Miri branch, has installed a new Malaysian Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNAM) siren at Luak Esplanade, Miri, and it will carry out a test run of the siren tomorrow (May 23), from 10am to 12pm.

“Residents in the surrounding area are advised not to panic at the sound of the siren as it is only a test,” the department said in a notice issued.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), throughout the trial run, the siren will be tested at full volume (full blast), accompanied by a voice message. The alert is expected to be audible within a three-kilometre radius of the siren’s location.

The installation at Luak Esplanade is one of three tsunami siren units currently in place across Miri. The other two are located at MCC Public Park, next to the Miri City Hall, and near New World Mart in Lutong.

This effort by MET Malaysia is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthen the country’s early disaster warning system, especially in high-risk areas such as coastal areas.

Residents around Miri, especially those living near the coast, are advised to stay informed through official channels, and understand emergency signals and procedures related to natural disasters. – DayakDaily
