Privacy dashboard, app permissions get M3 Expressive with June Google Play system update

The M3 Expressive rollout continues today with more of the Android 16 QPR1 system UI getting refreshed, including the Privacy dashboard and app permission prompts.

Settings > Security & privacy already leveraged Material 3 Expressive in the first QPR1 betas, but Google is now making some visual adjustments. For example, the “Security” grouping gets improved spacing for the checkmarks.

These spacing tweaks are also present in Privacy controls where the latest Material 3 toggle style is now used.

Old (May) vs. new (June)

The Privacy dashboard places everything in M3 Expressive containers, including the top donut chart and the list of permissions. Tapping into Location, Camera, or Microphone reveals a similar revamp for the usage timeline. It’s no longer as flat as before, but everything looks a bit more visually cluttered when comparing side-by-side.

Meanwhile, Google has updated the prompt that appears when apps request permissions. You now get pill-shaped buttons for: While using the app, Only this time, and Don’t allow. This visual distinction might help reduce unintended taps.

These M3 Expressive changes are rolling out with the June 1, 2025 Google Play system update for Android 16 QPR1 Beta users. To update, go to: Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates > Google Play system update.
