According to a report by The Star, the four public areas where the ban will be enforced are public fields, children’s playgrounds, recreational parks, and public beaches in Port Dickson.
RM2,000 fine for offendersSpeaking to reporters after chairing the weekly State Executive Council (Exco) meeting yesterday (Jul 3), Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the ban comes following high volumes of complaints from the public.
“Such activities usually occur at night and often leave behind litter like empty bottles and trash, leading to residents’ complaints.
“Previously, we only issued warnings, but this time we will take immediate action, including imposing a RM2,000 compound,” he said as quoted by Utusan.
Public nuisanceAminuddin added irresponsible individuals would often break the glass bottles and leave their mess behind.
As such, there have been instances of people getting injured by broken glass.
“We’ve also received reports of fights breaking out among those who drink alcohol in public spaces, and this has caused fear among those who see groups of people consuming alcohol.“All Malaysians should be allowed free access to these places anytime without having to worry about their safety or wellbeing,” he said.
Currently, Negeri Sembilan’s by-laws does not specify that drinking alcohol in public places is an offence, which Aminuddin said has led to certain public areas being turned into popular drinking spots.
