The Negeri Sembilan state government is looking to tighten existing laws, including raising compound fines, to curb alcohol consumption in public areas.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the move is necessary as the state frequently receives complaints about people drinking in public spaces like recreational parks, children’s playgrounds, and beaches, according to Utusan Malaysia.
A RM2k fine will be issued
Aminuddin defended the move, saying he didn’t want spaces meant for families to be tainted by what he described as “immoral behaviour.”
He added that while many warnings have been given in the past, it’s now time to take firm action by issuing a RM2,000 compound on the spot.
“We intend to enforce such a law”
Aminuddin added that the stricter approach aligns with the state’s efforts to maintain public order and respect the sensitivities of the local community.
On a separate note, he said the decision on enforcement regarding the use of electronic cigarettes or vapes will be addressed during the upcoming Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.
