KUCHING, July 8: A man suspected of hurling stones at vehicles along Jalan Batu Kawa here has been arrested following a month-long police patrol operation.
According to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, the suspect was caught red-handed last night (July 7) while arranging rocks on the road divider, an act matching dash cam footage from earlier incidents, and is now in police custody under mental health evaluation.
Chong, who is also Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman, said the arrest came after sustained police efforts triggered by multiple complaints of vehicles being damaged by stone-throwing along the busy stretch.
“We were informed that following several previous incidents of stones being thrown at vehicles and smashing their windscreens along Jalan Batu Kawa, police had assigned a patrol to monitor the area since last month.
“The month-long effort paid off with the arrest of a suspect who, at the time of arrest, was arranging stones on the road divider along Jalan Batu Kawa.
“The suspect’s appearance also matched that of the individual caught on dash cam during earlier incidents,” he said in a statement today after visiting the Padawan police headquarters with his special assistant, Sim Kiat Leng.
He added that police have not ruled out the possibility of other individuals being involved, and will continue to monitor the situation while applying to the court to remand the suspect.
“I thank the police for their tireless efforts in keeping our streets safe for the public.
“We hope members of the public will continue to cooperate with the police by providing information on crimes and wrongdoing to assist in solving and preventing crime,” said Chong. — DayakDaily
