KUCHING, July 8: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Sarawak, through its Members of Parliament, is ready to support the initiative to increase the number of Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) seats and to contribute input and cooperation with all parties to ensure the process is conducted transparently and with integrity, for the wellbeing of the people and the overall progress of the State.
In a media statement issued today, Bersatu Sarawak welcomed the Sarawak government’s initiative to review and restructure electoral constituencies following the passing of the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill, 2025, which increases the number of DUS seats from 82 to 99.
Describing the addition of new DUS constituencies as essential, Bersatu Sarawak stressed the need for more balanced, fair, and effective representation at the State level, especially for rural areas that are growing in population and development.
“As a party that upholds the people’s interests and the principles of democracy, Bersatu Sarawak emphasises that any redelineation process must be based on three key principles,” said the statement issued by Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian, member of the Bersatu Supreme Council and head of the Bersatu Sarawak Leadership Committee.
These include: (i) fair representation without manipulation or political bias, (ii) prioritising rural populations still in need of development and service delivery, and (iii) ensuring a comprehensive public consultation process involving political parties, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and local communities.
Bersatu Sarawak reiterated that any restructuring of electoral boundaries must reflect genuine public needs, without dividing communities, serving elite political interests, or undermining the aspirations of the Sarawak people.
“We believe an inclusive and just Sarawak, politically, can only be realised when the voice of the people is genuinely represented in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly,” it added. — DayakDaily
