'1670' Season 2 Ending Explained & Series Recap: Is Bogdan Dead Or Alive?
17 小时前
The Polish satire comedy series 1670 is back with a second season that is more absurd and unpredictable than its first installment. Centered around a fictitious village, Adamczycha, the first season dealt with Jan Pawel Adamczewski’s desperate attempt to become the sole owner of his village, and in season 2 he was finally living the life he’d always envisioned, but it was far from perfect. From losing most of his wealth in an attempt to host the Harvest Festival to almost dying in the hands of Bogdan, the second season is a rollercoaster ride for Jan and his family. Can Jan Pawel Adamczewski hold on to his estate, or did someone else challenge his claim? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Was Bogdan possessed? There was something odd about Bogdan, and his devilish blue eyes gave it away. Since Andrzej had lost everything, Jan had proposed that he marry off one of his daughters to Bogdan, one of the wealthiest noblemen in the village. In the previous season, Bogdan won a massive reward from the royal court, and from barely being able to afford food, he now lived a life of luxury. Bogdan courted Andrzej’s three daughters for a day, though he ultimately had to choose Tereska because Andrzej told him so.
While courting Tereska, we saw a glimpse of the power of the devil that resided in Bogdan—as soon as he’d uttered a spell, the cow he was trying to milk immediately obeyed his command. When Bogdan, Jan, Andrzej, Stanislaw, and Jakub headed to Cracow for Bogdan’s stag trip, they got drunk beyond their wits, and that was when the evil spirit residing in Bogdan took over. The demonic spirit couldn’t keep up with the pretense and announced that he wanted to take Jan’s soul. Jan didn’t think much about it, but when Bogdan ripped off the server’s ear, they realized he was dangerous. Bogdan remembered how Jan and Zofia had tried to play him, but luck favored him, and that was the only reason he was still alive and well. He stated with vengeance that he despised the Adamczewski family.
Jan cracked up when Bogdan started to speak of himself in the third person, but it soon became clear that he shouldn’t be messed with. He was determined to murder everyone in the room, and as expected, Jan requested Bogdan to start the killing spree with Andrzej. Jakub decided to distract the demon with a game, and since it’s a comedy drama, Bogdan happily participated. In the meantime, Stanislaw attempted to attack Bogdan from behind, but he tripped and fell and ended up stabbing Andrzej’s foot. Bogdan, aka the demon spirit, used its magical power to get hold of Jan, and he attempted to choke him to death. Thankfully, Aniela had also traveled to Cracow in disguise, and she ultimately came to her father’s rescue. She pulled out the gun she was carrying and shot Bogdan. His body fell off the balcony and onto the street. The demon spirit left Bogdan’s body and entered the body of a cat passing by.
Why did Jan burn the fake records?Since Jan had arranged the Harvest Festival, it was almost a given that he would be elected as the new head of the people of Adamczycha. But to his surprise, Andrzej announced that he believed he deserved to be the leader. After some debate and a food challenge, when it ultimately came down to a tie between Jan and Andrzej, Jakub betrayed his father and sided with Andrzej because he believed Jan never supported him even though he believed he was the only one who deserved to run the estate. The argument between Jakub and Jan escalated, and he was shocked when his son revealed that Jan was born to a fake nobleman. He showed the document that Jan used to prove his legitimacy, and it turned out Jan’s great-grandfather had forged the ennoblement act. Jakub stated that since his father didn’t know anything about it, all he wanted was for his father to be allowed to run the estate but in a modest manner.
Jan fumed with rage, and he pulled out an unexpected move. Jan showed another scroll, the very sacred Act of Poland document, the original baptism. Andrzej refused to believe it was a fake, so Jan asked him to read the document out loud. He didn’t find anything odd at first, but when Jan urged him to reread the words ‘Polish Krystian Repubic,’ he realized that the document had the word ‘repubic’ instead of ‘republic,’ which meant the document was fake, and therefore the existence of the entire village and the characters was also fake. 1670 season 2 breaks the fourth wall and requests the audience to never reveal this secret because it could jeopardize their existence. The characters became self-aware of the fact that they were not real, but since it was not an easy truth to accept, they unanimously agreed that it was best for them to believe in the fake reality they had created. Ultimately in the final episode of 1670 season 2, Jan burned both the documents, and the king ultimately decided that Jan and Andrzej should team up together and rule over the people of Adamczycha.
Why did Maciej join the smuggling network?Aniela had repeatedly proved her smartness and wisdom, and Jan realized that she deserved to manage the estate more than his sons, Stanislaw and Jakub. Immediately after appointing Aniela as the manager, Jan requested his daughter to improve the salt sale. After the king gave the gentry some privileges, the common people could only buy salt from their lords at a higher price. So, the common people found a way out of it; a smuggling gang paid a little to the mine guard, and he ensured that some of the salt they mined was kept away to be distributed in the black market. It was their way to seek revenge on the master who barely cared for their subjects. Maciej, the blacksmith’s son, joined the smuggling network in the hopes of protesting against constant servitude. He was in love with Aniela, and when he saw her get friendly with a nobleman who worked for the king, he realized that he was a fool to consider that they had a future together. Maciej maintained a distance from Aniela, and she couldn’t help but wonder what she’d done wrong. With time, Maciej got more involved with the smuggling network, but one day when he was supposed to make a delivery, he crossed paths with Aniela, and all the salt he was carrying went to waste. He promised Stasia, the leader of the gang, that he would find his way to the storeroom and steal the salt. But he got unlucky, and Regina, one of the maids, who had a crush on him and whom he’d rejected, told Aniela that there was a thief in the storeroom. Since she was responsible for improving the salt sale, she chose to keep away her personal feelings for Maciej and deal with him as she should.
Maciej confessed that the reason why he joined the smuggling network was because he wanted to make quick bucks and build a life for them outside the village. Aniela wasn’t convinced; she didn’t think he should have stolen from her family, and she also believed that he should’ve revealed his plans to her. Maciej explained that he needed to be an equal, or else their relationship wouldn’t have ever worked out. Maciej was ultimately taken to prison, and later Aniela traveled to Cracow (donning a moustache) to set him free. Luck favored Aniela, and the gun helped her convince the driver of the carriage to release Maciej. When he proposed they leave behind the village and start their life anew, Aniela explained that she wasn’t ready to leave because she believed she owed it to her father to run the estate.
Whom did Aniela choose?Aniela chose duty over love, but in 1670 season 2’s ending, her mother reminded her of the importance of prioritizing love because, at the end of the day, one should never live with regret. After breaking up with Rozalia, Zofia experienced a tremendous heartbreak. But she chose her duty as a wife and a mother over allowing herself the freedom to love. The donkey perhaps represented the shame and embarrassment of not choosing herself and, to an extent, encouraging Aniela to make the same mistake. Aniela had learned about her mother’s affair when she found a bunch of letters in her coat pocket. Rozalia continued to write to her, and clearly they were still in love, but their circumstances didn’t allow them to be with one another. Although Zofia had always wanted Aniela to marry a nobleman, at the end of 1670, she advised Aniela to be with the man she loved instead of dedicating her whole life to the estate. Aniela ultimately abandoned her responsibilities as the estate manager and decided to live her life on her own terms, and she left the village. Hopefully, she’ll soon be reunited with Maciej.
What happened to Jakub and Stanislaw?Stanislaw had fallen in love with Andrzej’s eldest daughter, Tereska. After Bogdan’s death, Stanislaw didn’t hesitate to express his liking for her. He was a simple musician who wanted to be with the woman of his dreams, so he’d asked Jakub to take over the estate if he wanted, because he was shrewd enough to plan and plot to get his share. Tereska and Stanislaw performed at the Harvest Festival, and everyone in the audience figured that they were deeply in love.
During 1670 season 2’s ending, Stanislaw packed his belongings and was about to take off with Tereska when his father decided to have a word with him. He couldn’t believe that his children were about to abandon him now that they were so close to his dream. Stanislaw explained that they’d all realized what they actually wanted from their lives. They chose to be themselves instead of pretending to be like their father. He had learned to accept that he wasn’t smart, and the weight of having to prove himself or achieve great success was gone. He realized he could be a regular guy and live a happily married life with Tereska. Jan finally accepted Stanislaw’s decision, and his son embraced him before leaving the manor to tour the world. Jakub, who was so obsessed with becoming the sole manager of the estate, also left. He explained that he didn’t get enough space to fully live his dream, so he had no choice but to move out of the village and settle in Warsaw, a place big enough to accommodate his elaborate plans. And he had every intention of conquering the capital. Andrzej went along with him because he too wasn’t ready to settle for the bare minimum, and he believed he was as ambitious as Jakub. Jan and Zofia were the only ones left at the manor. Everything he’d been fighting for didn’t amount to something great. His children didn’t care about inheriting his property, and unlike him, they chose to follow their passion instead of just fulfilling their duties. As parents, it was difficult for them to accept this reality, but then again, their children dared to do what they couldn’t, and that was surely something to be proud of.
Did Bogdan come back to life? Two thieves who came across Bogdan’s dead body on the street stole the cash that they found on him. But the minute they did so, a demonic creature referred to as ‘the hatter’ appeared in the night sky, and the thieves ran for their lives. Something magical happened that night, and in the final scene of season 2, Bogdan came back to life. We are yet to find out who ‘the hatter’ is, clearly an omnipresent supernatural being, but we don’t yet know how he is related to Bogdan. Was he just someone who ensured a low crime rate? Even though Bogdan was shot and was assumed dead by passersby, he regained consciousness. Maybe this chapter is not yet over, so he has to make a return even if it doesn’t logically make sense, but by now the audience already knows that it’s all a pretense. Or perhaps, before the demon left Bogdan’s body, it magically healed his wound. Considering how things have drastically changed, Bogdan will have a hard time accepting the fact that his would-be bride, Tereska, had taken off with Stanislaw. He might even feel cheated by Jan, and that can result in a feud. Since Jan had failed to fulfill his promise of getting him married, Bogdan can demand compensation, and once again he might have to reconsider the ownership of the estate.
1670 season 2’s ending hints at a third season, but then again, it can also be interpreted as an open-ended conclusion to a very bizarre tale. Although things can get a tad bit boring if the story is stretched any further.
