KUCHING, Sept 18: A comprehensive review of maritime law provisions, including the Sarawak Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1960, is expected to be completed within two years.
Minister for Transport Sarawak (MOTS) Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the revision seeks to update outdated provisions and strengthen Sarawak’s powers in maritime matters.
The review is being undertaken by a special committee comprising his ministry and the Sarawak Attorney-General’s Chambers.
He explained that Sarawak is governed by its own Sarawak Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1960, which prescribes certain areas under State jurisdiction.
“There are already certain powers vested to Sarawak under the Ordinance, for example on coastal shipping such as vessels sailing within Sarawak’s coastal waters from Kuching to Miri or Sibu to Bintulu.
“We would like to have more powers given to Sarawak, such as on ship surveys and the certification of certain categories of vessels. That is why we are working to update our laws,” he told reporters when met after officiating the inaugural Sarawak Maritime Day at Waterfront Hotel here today.
Lee pointed out that the review is also necessary to bring Sarawak’s maritime laws in line with international standards, particularly with the global shift towards digitalisation, green energy and sustainable shipping.
“This is not only for Sarawak but for Malaysia as a whole. We must ensure full compliance with international requirements,” he added.
On the timeline, Lee confirmed that the committee has already begun work this year.
“The revision work has started this year and the committee will complete it within two years,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
