The Selangor government is prioritising the use of Bahasa Melayu, making proficiency in the national language a key requirement for owning land, property, and premises in the state.

Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said this helps confirm that a person is Malay or Bumiputera, alongside practising Malay customs and being a Muslim.

“It promotes unity and patriotism among everyone”

According to Berita Harian, Amirudin said the move is important to make sure someone can be considered Malay and eligible for land quotas in Selangor.

He added that it also highlights how important the Bahasa Melayu is for promoting unity and patriotism among everyone.

While not elaborated in the Berita Harian report, other local media quoted the Selangor Menteri Besar as saying that the Bahasa Melayu proficiency criterion is only for Malay Reserve Land eligibility and Malay housing quotas in Selangor.

“Names and signs should be in Bahasa Melayu”

Amirudin added that the state government is fully committed to the National Language Act, making sure all signs, street names, and place names follow the guidelines set by the Bahasa Melayu Language and Literature Agency (DBP).
