KUCHING, Oct 28: Sarawak is targeting to begin exporting 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy to Singapore by 2032, once the construction of the undersea cable is fully completed.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the undersea cable project will be undertaken by a financial consortium in which both Malaysia and Singapore will hold interests.
“This will be one of the first major projects of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, as it involves transmitting power from Sarawak through an undersea cable. The cable will be developed by a consortium with participation from both Singapore and Malaysia and financed by financial institutions.
“Earlier, I also discussed with Singapore’s minister the approaches for implementing this project. Alhamdulillah, everything seems to be on track, and I would like to thank the Sarawak Energy staff who have addressed several technical issues that have been mutually agreed upon between us and Singapore,” he said.
He said this in an interview with Ukas and TVS reporters after delivering his keynote address at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2025 Summit, held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, on Monday (Oct 27).
The Premier noted that this is among the largest projects in the Asia-Pacific region, with Sarawak and Malaysia playing key roles alongside Singapore.
“If this succeeds—and I believe it will—it will set a precedent for power exports across ASEAN, with Sarawak playing a crucial role,” he added. — DayakDaily
