Lawas man arrested for allegedly molesting niece, possessing illegal firearm

KUCHING, Oct 28: A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of molesting his niece, who is a secondary school student, while she was staying at his house during the recent weekend school holidays.

In a report by TVS, Lawas District Police Chief DSP Liong Tindan said the suspect was detained at a house along Jalan Lawas Damit after police received a report from the victim at about 3.17pm last Sunday (Oct 26).

Following the report, a police team raided the suspect’s house and apprehended him. During the search, officers discovered a shotgun and three shotgun shells.

“Checks revealed that the suspect did not possess a firearm licence. He was arrested for further investigation,” he said in a recent statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960.

According to DSP Liong, a background check showed the suspect had three prior drug-related offences.

In a separate operation, police arrested a 34-year-old local man at 9.50pm on suspicion of drug abuse.

“Searches of the suspect’s house, car, and motorcycle did not yield any illegal items, but a urine test came back positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine,” he added.

Further checks revealed the second suspect had no prior criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, TVS reported. — DayakDaily
