Schools nationwide to resume January start in 2026; 2027 term begins Jan 4 for all

KUCHING, Oct 28: Schools nationwide will resume a January start in 2026 for a smoother and more consistent academic schedule.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) announced the following academic year for national and government-aided schools:

As for the 2027 school year, the ministry said it will start on January 4 for both groups.

According to MoE, the transition back to a January start has been carried out in phases and with careful planning to ensure school operations continue smoothly.

“This achievement is the result of meticulous planning and the unwavering commitment of the education community at all levels,” the ministry said in its recent statement.

MoE said the move reflects its determination to give priority to the welfare of all stakeholders, including students, teachers and school communities.

The return to the traditional January school opening, following adjustments made due to the pandemic, will provide clearer planning for holidays, academic programmes and examinations.
