Loke slams Ewon's statement on Sabah candidates as irresponsible
DAP’s Anthony Loke calls UPKO president’s remarks divisive, says all candidates in Sabah election are locals regardless of party affiliation

KOTA KINABALU: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has labelled United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation president Datuk Ewon Benedick’s statement about Sabah voters as irresponsible.

The DAP secretary-general said Ewon’s remarks could damage relationships between local and national political parties.

Loke emphasised that all candidates contesting in the 17th Sabah State Election are local leaders regardless of their party affiliation.

“I feel that is a rather irresponsible statement and attempts to divide the leaders of local parties and national parties,” he told reporters after a community event.

He noted that Ewon’s position contradicted his actions since he continues receiving salary as a federal minister despite announcing his resignation.

Loke reminded that Pakatan Harapan had given Ewon the opportunity to serve as a federal minister even though his party holds only two parliamentary seats.

“As a federal minister, one must have the characteristic of uniting the people, not dividing them,” he stated.

He urged Sabah voters to reject narratives creating hostility between Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

Loke called for focus on forming a stable state government capable of maintaining good relations with the federal government.
