M'sian Loses Job After 8 Years Of Waking Up At 4am To Work In S'pore, Now Unsure Of Future | WeirdKaya
A Malaysian man is now facing uncertainty over his future after he was retrenched from a job he held onto for eight years.

His story is just one of the many Malaysians who wake up before the sun does and travel across the Causeway into Singapore in order to build a better life for their families.

Same routine for 8 years

In a lengthy Facebook post, the OP wrote that his daily routine consisted of him waking up at 4am and enduring the notorious traffic congestion at the Customs checkpoint leading into Singapore.

“At the beginning, the traffic jams were especially difficult to bear as it was physically exhausting.

“But as the years passed, I got “numb” to it. Humans are so strange… we’re somehow able to turn something so difficult into a normal routine.”

The OP wrote that throughout the eight years, he had thought about quitting his job countless times but would always reconsider when he got his salary.

“Whenever I got my pay, I’d be reminded that working in Singapore gave me the ability to support my family, something I won’t be able to do in Malaysia as my income would likely reduce by half.”

‘I’m sorry but you won’t be retained’

The OP said that two weeks ago, he noticed something was amiss as he observed a sharp decline in factory orders and heard colleagues speculating about layoffs.

His intuition would later proved to be accurate when HR called him in and informed that they would be relocating its production line back to Malaysia and won’t be retaining his role.

After receiving his termination letter, the OP travelled across the Causeway like he always did. Except that this time would be the final time where he would be forced to be stuck in traffic with the rest.

Unsure of next step

When the OP got home that night, he didn’t break the news to his family and merely watched his children playing and his wife going about with her chores.

“These were moments I rarely got to witness throughout the eight years as I had to work long hours. At last, I can be with my family again,” he wrote.

However, he admitted that he now worries over providing for his family, which includes raising his children and monthly loan repayments.

Although his friends have tried to comfort him by saying retrenchment was normal and that he would find another job, the OP said there’s one thing that greatly worries him.

“When I was still employed, my biggest fear was running late for work due to traffic. Now, I fears waking up the next day with nowhere to go.”
