Thai martial art thrillers tend to balance action and heart, and are generally known for their less cerebral, more emotional tone, as seen in movies like “Vengeance of an Assassin,” “Tom Yum Goong,” and “Ong Bak” highlights. Netflix’s latest Thai venture, directed by Taweewat Wantha, “My Dearest Assassin,” is another addition to such action fares. The narrative largely revolves around the quest for survival of Lhan, a girl whose extremely rare Aurum blood group makes her a target of the hunters, aka assassins for hire working for the privileged. The emotional core of the story evolves with the relation between Lhan and Pran, and the truth about why House 89 adopted Lhan as their own. When it comes to characterization, “My Dearest Assassin” appears a bit trite, but ultimately gets the job done by focusing on a central arc of survival.
Lhan Played By Pimchanok LuevisadpaibulThai actor/model Pimchanok Luevisadpaibu got her big break with the hit romantic comedy, “A Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and since then, she has garnered acclaim for her performances in movies like “Cat a Wabb,” “Friend Zone,” “Con Heartist,” etc. Some of Pimchanok’s notable small screen appearances include “Slam Dance,” “Lhong Fai,” “The Fallen Leaf,” and “Thicha,” to name a few. In “My Dearest Assassin,” she plays the role of Lhan, a girl whose life gets upturned by the machinations of a vicious assassin named Pruek, after she is found to be possessing the rarest Oorum blood type. Uniqueness became a curse throughout her life, leading Lhan forever struggling to find some semblance of freedom and peace. Having lost her family and been uprooted from her home, a young Lhan had no other choice except to trust members of the assassin group, House 89, who rescued her from Pruek’s clutches. Lhan didn’t have any agency over her own life from a young age, and she was cut off from the rest of the world. However, a sharp and observant individual, she was able to learn basic martial arts simply through observation. Lhan found kindred spirits among the teenagers of her age in House 89, Pran and M, their friendship restoring some sense of normalcy in her mind. Lhan eventually fell for Pran, who gave her her first taste of freedom. However, Lhan gets the biggest shock of her life when, following a devastating assault by the Mala Gang and Pruek’s crew, she finds out she was rescued by House 89 to act as Pran’s blood bank, not out of genuine goodwill. Lhan, who had considered the ragtag group of killers her second family, goes through an emotional crisis, and nearly leaves the group. However, her bond with Pran makes her stay, along with a sense of gratitude towards those who gave up their lives for her safety – irrespective of the reason in question. However, this time, Lhan decides to take control over her own life, by learning martial arts properly so she doesn’t have to depend on anyone else to defend herself. By the end, Lhan lost everyone, but her experience as a survivor has made her competent enough to hold on her own. As a mother to a child who also belongs to the same rare blood group, Lhan has taught her son to become self-dependent, so that he doesn’t have to suffer like she had to. Natthaya Ongsritragul portrayed the role of young Lhan.
Pran Played By Thanapob LeeratanakachornThai actor Thanapob Leeratanakachorn has gained recognition thanks to his performance on the silver screen in projects like “One For the Road,” “Ghost Lab,” “May Who?”, etc. Thanapob’s popularity on the small screen came with “Hormones,” “In Family We Trust,” “The Stranded,” “Midnight Museum,” etc. In “My Dearest Assassin,” he plays the role of House89 leader, Poh’s son, Pran. A kind, compassionate soul, Pran was able to connect with Lhan, and unaware of the reality of her predicament, tried to get her acquainted with the bigger world outside their antique shop hideout. However, when the truth about Lhan’s purpose of being in the group surfaces, Pran is understandably shaken, ashamed at the fact that his family kept her captive to be exploited. Being in love with Lhan, Pran wanted to let her leave the group after knowing everything to help her achieve her dream of freedom. By the end, Pran makes amends for the actions of his father by sacrificing his own life to provide Lhan a new beginning. Win Sakulsaengprapha portrayed the role of young Pran.
M Played by Sivakorn AdulsuttikulThai actor Sivakorn Adulsuttikul has previously acted in movies like “Ghost Coins,” and small screen ventures like “Great Men Academy” and “21 Days.” In “My Dearest Assassin,” he plays the role of M, another stray kid like Lhan, who was adopted by House89 to be trained into an assassin. A sensible, loyal individual who sacrifices his own aspirations for the sake of his loved ones, M can be considered the most tragic figure in the movie. Despite having feelings for Lhan, M never professed his love for her after knowing how Pran felt about her, and ultimately gave up his life to defend both of his friends. Aeiyapol Lekpittaya portrayed the role of young M.
Miscellaneous CharactersAside from the main characters, “My Dearest Assassin” has a talented supporting cast who did a great job with the roles they were given. Chartayodom Hiranyatithi plays the role of Poh, leader of the House89 assassin group who adopted Lhan to keep her as a failsafe for his son, Pran – as both of them shared the same rare blood group. Theerachai Wimolchaireuk plays the devious, deadly assassin Pruek, who relentlessly pursued Lhan and met a deserving end at her hands. Chanudom Sukhsathit plays the role of Chaba, one of the leaders of Mala gang.
