Tagusari Bros. Episode 4 Recap: What Do Makoto And Minoru Find In Their Old House?

“Tagusari Bros.” has been amazing so far, and now that Tsuda is dead, “Tagusari Bros.” we’ve come to a dead end, at least for now. In this week’s episode, we see Minoru and Makoto curse their fates while rummaging through Tsuda’s stuff. They have already called Fumi, but she does not seem to recognize Tsuda at all. Makoto has also seen a key, which can belong to any locker in the world, inside Tsuda’s bag, and he plans to go on a nationwide search for that locker, if needed. However, before anything happens further, they get stopped on their tracks by the Police Chief of Aoi Station, Koike.

Spoilers Ahead

Why Does Koike Stop the Tagusari Brothers from Investigating Tsuda?

Koike, who worked for the First Division, was given the duty of investigating Makoto and Minoru’s parents’ deaths. He looked into the matter closely enough to understand that Tsuda could not be included in the list of suspects. Tsuda warned Sakutaro that he would be back at night, but he was in a bar at Jingbocho, drinking his time away. Koike checked the footage of the bar, and he could not be suspicious of Tsuda since his alibi had solid ground. Tsuda was trying to investigate the factory fire, and the footage had to be deleted since a politician got involved with the case. He stops Makoto and Minoru for two main reasons: one – he knows that the statute of limitations bill will not let them reopen the case and get a judgment, and two – running behind Tsuda is meaningless because he is innocent. Koike sees no point in pursuing the case and pleads with Makoto to give the key back, but the investigator refuses to do so. The Tagusari brothers want to investigate their parents’ death, and before Koike can say anything at all, something else pops up on the police radar.

Is Hiranaka Dead?

The guy we saw Makoto chase earlier was Hiranaka, who has a black mark on his neck. He was at the crime scene among the onlookers in Kanagawa, while the police investigated Aiko’s tragic death due to the fire. Makoto ran after him, but Hiranaka got away in a white car, and now, it has come to light that there might have been gold bars inside the big box he was carrying. After all, Aiko was guarding the gold bars that were originally from an old robbery case. However, both Makoto and Minoru are surprised to find out that Hiranaka is dead, and the post-mortem reveals nine stab wounds on his body. Minoru figures out the stabs are straight, but fails to make anything of it, until Makoto points out that the attack might be unplanned. The stab marks on Hiranaka’s body vary in depth because the killer is not a trained assassin, and the attack has been carried out in haste, indicating a panicked state of mind.

Why Does Minoru Pay Fumi A Visit?

While Aiko’s murder still remains a mystery, Minoru sets his sights on another unsolved case that has been bothering the Tagusari brothers a lot. He and Makoto wonder why Fumi’s contact is saved on Tsuda’s phone. Minoru visits Fumi, who has now healed from her injuries and is now a professional photographer, to interrogate her. However, Minoru does not reveal his or Makoto’s profession to her, as he fears that Fumi may suppress the truth if she knew their police backgrounds. Minoru tries to extract further information from Fumi since both the brothers think that Fumi has something to do with their parents’ murder. I’m not saying they think she is the killer, but being on the contact list of a suspicious person like Tsuda is problematic. Minoru does not get much information from her, as Fumi claims that she does not know Tsuda. He agrees to spare Fumi’s husband from the interrogation after she informs him that he has fallen sick.

Is Togo The Mastermind Behind Hiranaka And Aiko’s Deaths?

The police came to know that Hiranaka bought shares from the gold bars and lived in the same housing as Aiko. Makoto found a childhood photograph where Aiko, Saki, Hiranaka, and Yuzuru were standing outside a children’s canteen – since they had always been a closely knit group of friends, the police thought that the robbery, which was conducted by four people, was executed by these four. While the investigators manage to pull up recent images of Saki, Hiranaka, and Aiko, Yuzuru’s face remain in the dark. The investigators think Togo might be Yuzuru’s family name, but that theory gets canceled when they get reminded of the four robbers. However, Togo’s face cannot be seen clearly because the footage at the Marina only shows an unclear figure getting away with Hiranaka’s suitcase. The police conclude that the mastermind must be Togo since Saki is not at her home. According to them, someone, most likely Togo, has murdered Saki since the officers have found blood on the carpet of her room.

Why Did Saki Kill Aiko and Hiranaka?

Makoto always knew that the attack on Hiranaka was carried out by someone close to him, because there was no sign of resistance from the man, which indicates that he was in absolute shock, most likely from betrayal. While everyone focuses on finding Togo, Minoru asks for a gait analysis of the figure in the footage, and it becomes clear that Togo is not a man, but a woman who has an injured foot. She is probably trying to sell the gold bars at a pawn shop and run away with the money since the Police are actively searching for the bars. Haruko initially backs away from giving this information out because she does not want to expose any of her colleagues, but ultimately tells Makoto that a pawn shop in Yokohama has received a large quantity of gold. When Makoto and Kudo arrest Saki, she admits that she killed Aiko because she understood that there was nobody named Togo. Actually, it was the name of a debt collector who used to terrify Saki in her childhood. Saki was the mastermind of the robbery and told Hiranaka to throw the burning leaflet inside to frighten Aiko and make her believe that Togo existed. She thought Aiko was away, but sadly, she was killed, and Hiranaka could not suppress his guilt. Saki had to kill Hiranaka because he was going to turn himself in and confess everything. She tried to escape all this by selling the gold bars quickly but in the end, her plan fell apart.

Why Does Kudo Empathise With Saki’s Struggle?

Saki came from a humble background, and from her childhood, she dreamt of living a life in the rich neighbourhoods and tall skyscrapers. She always considered money to be the only solution to all her problems, and that’s why Saki could not give up her bad habits. Saki’s disturbed childhood was nothing different from Kudo’s, since her father cheated on her mother. Their lives were pretty much two sides of a coin, where Kudo ended up at a better place because she made better decisions. While they were driving to the police station, Kudo’s eyes welled up after hearing Saki’s story. I think Kudo believed that no matter what happened, we all had a choice and that was the only reason why she reacted so emotionally when Yuzuru claimed that Saki left no choice for him but to steal the gold.

What do Makoto And Minoru Find In Their Old House?

Despite Tsuda’s sudden tragic death, the brothers did not give up on finding their parents’ killer. Apart from the memory of that night, the two of them saw Sakutaro as a kind, calm gentleman who lived an honest life. The brothers used to laugh about their father’s antics as well, since he always gave off a very genuine vibe, as much as they could remember. Makoto goes back to their parents’ house with Minoru to revisit their childhood, but the two brothers get shocked at how the night ends. Just like old days, Makoto goes through the drawers of the house, discovering crayon paintings he and his brother had made back in the days. When they reach their room, Makoto discovers the metallic toy robot from their childhood, but something seems to be stuck inside. As Makoto dismantles the toy, he finds a handmade gun hidden inside it. This does not end well for both the Tagusari brothers, since they start to question reality itself. After all, they never expected their father to be dirty, and now, they get very suspicious of Sakutaro. Does the gun belong to Sakutaro, or has it been planted in their house to distract the brothers from chasing their parents’ murderer? I think we will get the answer very soon, and for that, we have to wait for the next episode.
