'Cape Fear' Episode 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Has Max Hypnotized Zack?

Episode 2 of Cape Fear opens with a flashback scene where we are taken 7 years into the past. I guess the black-and-white visual is a homage to the 1962 film while Max doing upside-down ab crunches is a nod to the 1991 film. Anyway, Max’s workout session is interrupted by what looks like 3 neo-Nazis and we see him get the head injury that he was telling Anna and Tom about at the museum. That said, even though it’s a 1-versus-3 fight, Max manages to kill all 3 of his assailants in the most brutal fashion imaginable. He starts to convulse and, after seeing some snippets of his wife and his unborn child, he collapses on the floor of the prison’s gym. In the present day, Max seems to be sleeping in the closet of the guest house where he currently lives, probably because it makes him feel like he is back in his cell. He has become so accustomed to falling asleep in that hellhole that even when he’s free, replicating the claustrophobia of a jail cell is the only way he experiences comfort. But that’s interrupted by 3 police officers (the visuals echo the entry of those 3 neo-Nazis in the jail cell) who have come to arrest him because the Bowdens suspect him of cutting off Zack’s toe. Max panics and starts attacking the officers. When the officers subdue him, one of them breaks one of Max’s fingers, which means that he has to take a trip to the hospital instead of the station. What happens next? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

The Bowdens And Max Are In The Hospital

At the hospital, Tom and Anna question a clearly discombobulated Zack what’s going on with him, where he has been, and what has happened to his toe. Zack is unable to answer any of those questions and he keeps rubbing his throat because he feels some discomfort there. Frustrated by the bad service at the hospital, Anna takes off to look for a doctor and then have some water. A woman in a green jacket, with a surgical mask on her face, bumps into Anna in the corridor and doesn’t even apologize for it. As Anna is about to drink from the fountain, he hears a familiar voice: it’s Max. Max is getting his finger reset and since the attending doctor is taking too much time to fix the finger, Max does the job himself; all that the doctor has to do is put a splint on it. As Max is catching a breather, Detective Grayson enters the minor injuries unit to question him about the manner in which he attacked the police officers. Max admits that he got startled and he went into fight-or-flight mode; he didn’t intend to fight those officers. That brings Grayson to the topic of Max’s hallucinations but instead of answering that question, Max just chuckles. Anna, who has been overhearing this whole conversation, tells the detectives to leave so that she can talk to Max alone. The detectives oblige Anna’s request and once they are out of earshot, Anna straight-up accuses Max of drugging Zack and then cutting off one of his toes. Max denies his involvement in anything that has happened to Zack.

Zack Has A Controversial Past

While countering Anna’s accusations about him hurting Zack, Max brings up their respective unwell dads and how that has shaped their psyches. Much like he said during the closing moments of the first episode, Max reiterates the fact that he is jealous of everything that Anna has achieved. But he makes it clear that that’s no reason for him to go around hurting his son. While all this is going on, Dr. Minter arrives to have a chat with Tom. Minter asks some standard questions and then zeroes in on Zack’s history at his school. So, this is where we learn (if it wasn’t obvious already) that Zack is a bit of a incel. Last year, Zack had a girlfriend and he had some intimate photos of her. He chose to share it in his “boys only” group chat, which obviously led to the humiliation of the girl. Zack apologized but the school made an example out of him so that nobody his age would even think about doing such a thing to a girl or anyone for that matter. Tom sounds like a typical “boy parent” as he says how the whole thing was so embarrassing for Zack, how he lost his friends, and how that episode has affected his mental health (sorry, incels don’t deserve sympathy, not even from their parents).

Zack Vomits Out His Own Toe

Natalie is at home telling her biological dad, Paul, about Zack’s missing toe. Paul is currently married to Brittany and she clearly disapproves of Paul’s amicable bond with Natalie. Since Brittany orders Paul to come to bed and Natalie hears someone knocking on the door, they both hang up. Initially it seems like something bad is going to happen to Natalie, but it’s just her friend, Callie, who has arrived to jumpscare her and then get high with her. After everything that has transpired in the past few hours, Natalie welcomes Callie with open arms and they get busy drinking and smoking weed. It’s evident that Natalie is attracted to Callie but Callie just sees Natalie as a friend. Natalie gets the hint and takes a step back. It is at this moment that they hear a phone buzzing somewhere in the under-construction sections of the house. While searching for this phone, Natalie and Callie spot a possum that’s gorging on the food that’s there along with candles and some other items that have been assembled for what looks like a black magic ritual. They do find the phone (AngelX seems to be calling on it) and some blood. This brings her to the realization that whoever cut off Zack’s toe, or made Zack cut off his toe, did it in the house itself, and she calls Tom to let him know about that. At the same time, Zack’s throat problem increases and he vomits out his own toe (that’s one way to solve the mystery). This discovery prompts one of the nurses to go and find Anna, break up her heated argument with Max, and take her to her son (the editing and camerawork during this entire revelatory sequence is nuts).

Zack Meets Max

Once Zack has somewhat stabilized, Tom and Anna have a chat about how the circumstances of the incident kinda exonerate Max. Sure, if you nitpick it, you can place Max at the scene of the crime. But unless said nitpicking is done by professional investigators, Max is in the clear for now. Zack has come to his senses and wants to go home, but the doctors have said that they have to keep him in the hospital overnight to make sure that he is doing alright. Tom stays with Zack while Anna goes home to check on Natalie. While taking Zack to his private room, he makes a pit stop at the washroom, where he runs into Max. The nature of their brief conversation is very weird. It seems like they are meeting each other for the first time, and it also feels like Zack is somehow being manipulated by Max. Also, we don’t see the full extent of their conversation; so, we don’t know what’s actually going between them. When Max exits the washroom, Tom doesn’t spot Max in there; so, he won’t be able to see the connection between Max and Zack until it’s too late. After Zack goes to sleep in his private ward, Max finally consumes those drops that he carries around with him (after remembering some traumatic incident involving Zack), takes a seat, and chills out.

Zack Returns Home

At home, Anna inspects the black magic site. Natalie finds her there and they talk about Zack and the stuff that’s lying before them. This is when Natalie reveals that she has found Zack’s phone, but it’s locked; Anna keeps it. Anna hugs Natalie and essentially thanks her for not being a source of worry like Zack. As Anna and Natalie are having this moment, Noa calls up Anna to let her know that Byron and Bunny have been found dead. After getting to the crime scene, Ray and Noa inform Anna that the running theory is that Bunny killed Byron, suffered a heart attack herself, and perished. Given how Bunny spent years getting Byron out of prison, this theory doesn’t quite add up. As if this isn’t troubling enough, Noa informs Anna that Ruben, another one of their clients, wants to drop his appeal for a death sentence pardon because he supposedly isn’t interested in living anymore. Anna says that he can’t get to Ruben currently because she needs to get Zack home from the hospital first. Zack returns to his humble abode with his detached toe and it seems like he’s eager to take a shower and rest up.

Anna Tries To Talk To AngelX

Anna and Tom go to the kitchen to resume their discussion about the events that led to the attack on Zack. Tom doesn’t show a lot of interest in mystery-solving because he thinks it’s way more important to be present for Zack. Anna notices one of the digital photoframes in the house glitching (which has been happening since episode 1, thereby indicating that it has been hacked) and instead of addressing that, she focuses on unearthing the identity of Zack’s internet-girlfriend. They sit down with Zack in the hopes that he’s gonna shed some light on his toe-severing situation, but it seems like Zack has no memory of how he lost his toe. So, Anna goes on the offensive and tricks Zack into opening the lock on his phone so that she can go through his messages with AngelX. Zack gets so agitated that he verbally abuses his mother and tries to go after to retrieve his phone as Anna storms out, which prompts Tom to physically restrain him. Anna goes through Zack’s exchanges with his internet-girlfriend and there’s nothing really that stands out. Anna pretends to be Zack and tries to get AngelX to talk to her, but she doesn’t respond (probably because whoever’s on the other end knows that it’s not Zack who is texting).

Zack Wants To Apologize To Sophia

At night, while Tom is working, he hears the motion sensor in the backyard go off just like it did when Zack returned home with a severed toe. This time, Tom arms himself with a knife before going out only to find a box of Nike cleats lying on the stairs. Who has left them? Anna’s dad, Brandon. He apparently knows about Natalie’s interest in football and, although he sounds like a typical conservative dude, he wants Natalie to have a career in football. Due to Anna and Brandon’s sordid past, Tom doesn’t want to go behind her back and help Brandon forge a bond with her daughter. So, he returns the shoes to Brandon and requests that he leave, which Brandon does, albeit reluctantly. The following day, Tom finds Anna in one of the under construction sections of the house, going through the internet to see who this AngelX actually is. Anna is engrossed in that stuff that she has forgotten about her son; so, Tom gives her a reminder that she needs to focus on him instead of his alleged girlfriend. Speaking of Zack, he pulls out his secret cellphone to get in touch with Sophia, his ex-girlfriend whose pics he had shared with his friends. Sophia has no interest in talking to Zack and she hangs up. Zack sneaks out of his house at night again and this time, Natalie gets a hold of him. Zack says that he needs to meet Sophia and apologize to her for everything that he has done to her. Natalie realizes that Zack is having some kinda episode and she tries to talk him out of it. She realizes that Zack’s sudden need to apologize stems from the realization that his parents hate him for what he did at school. So, she tries to be relatable by saying that her feelings for their parents are similar to what Zack thinks about them. That said, she does underscore the fact that Tom and Anna care about them, and they need to reciprocate that sometimes. That gets Zack to calm down and he returns home with Natalie.

Tom Still Doesn’t Buy The Theory That Max Is Guilty

While Natalie heads to her room and Zack is about to go to his room, he starts seeing the ghost of Adam again, which poses the theory that maybe he’s in some kind of a spell that’s been put on him via hypnosis. I know that this version of Cape Fear is dramatically different from its previous iterations, but that doesn’t mean it has actual ghosts in it. Anna and Tom are unaware of all this as they are in the backyard talking about the circumstances under which Max was pronounced guilty of killing his wife. Anna still believes that Max is the murderer and his mistress, Amy Brancatto, was manipulated into taking the blame and then killing herself so that Max could enjoy his freedom because the authorities have nobody to question. Tom thinks that that hypothesis is way too far-fetched and they should just believe what’s in front of them, i.e. Max is innocent and Amy killed Max’s wife so that she could be with him. Well, if that’s the case, Anna wonders if they should feel guilty for sending an innocent man to jail for over a decade. Tom says that they did what they thought was right and they should just move on.

Max Meets Ruben

Max is seen going around his locality looking for a dog. He spots one who is neglected by his owner and he tricks the owner into giving up the dog; the owner is such an idiot that he obliges Max’s request. While walking through the neighborhood with his new dog, Max stops near a house where a lot of children are playing, which is where he spots that woman in a green jacket that bumped into Anna at the hospital. The sight of her causes Max to glitch out for a few seconds and he sees a vision of his dead wife again. By the time Max comes back to reality, the woman in the green jacket is gone. The next stop on Max’s checklist is the prison he used to be in, Tarwater State Prison. Why’s he there? To talk to Ruben, the guy who wants to withdraw his appeal for cancelling his death sentence. Why? Well, apparently the SJLP has employed Max to convince Ruben to continue to live, and surprisingly enough, Max delivers. He convinces Ruben to live and rewrite his story because, so far, it’s everyone else who has been doing the writing on his behalf, that too without his permission.

Max Officially Joins SJLP

The following day, Anna realizes that she has fumbled her assignment of going and meeting Ruben. She calls up Noa and apologizes for her mistake. Noa says that it’s fine because Max has done her job for her and Ruben has found his will to live again. Moreover, Noa informs her that Max is currently at the SJLP office doing an interview for The Times with Tabitha and cameraman Mike. Anna is shocked to her core and she says that she’s coming to the office immediately. In the time it takes for Anna to get to her office, Max is done painting a very sympathetic image of himself. He says that his father was an American soldier stationed in Spain, which was where he fell in love with a Basque woman and got her pregnant. Max’s mother didn’t want him, so it was tough growing up with her in Spain. Eventually Max’s mother killed herself; Max was in his teens then. Max was then sent to live with his father in the USA. Max’s father had a new family by then and, based on the flashbacks, he took out his frustration of having Max as his son by abusing the kid and making him undergo religious indoctrination. He powered his way through that and just when he thought he was in the clear, his wife was brutally “taken away” from him, and he was unjustly blamed for the murder. However, he has put all of that in the rearview mirror and he wants to focus on helping people like Ruben, via SJLP, and rebuilding his life.

Natalie Eavesdrops On Tom And Anna’s Conversation

When Max notices that Anna has entered the room where he’s being interviewed, he indirectly talks about living the life that Anna has, and then he utters the same set of words that Anna had seen in Zack’s chats with AngelX. Anna immediately rushes home to take a look at Zack’s phone and see if Max did say the phrase that AngelX had used. All this brings Anna to the conclusion that Max is pretending to be AngelX and catfishing Zack. Tom returns home only to see Anna obsessing over Zack’s phone again. Due to Tom’s demeanor, Anna doesn’t feel like sharing her theory with Tom. That said, Anna does ask Tom if Max has any way of knowing what they have done. Tom assures her nobody other than them knows about this incident that Anna is referring to. Natalie eavesdrops on this vague conversation and she looks scandalized because she probably thinks that Tom and Anna put Max in prison despite knowing that he was  innocent of murder; he was only guilty of being an abusive individual. Natalie might also be thinking that Tom and Anna killed Max’s wife and sent him to prison because incarcerating him was their top priority. But the possibility of that being the secret that Tom and Anna are keeping is low.

Max And Zack Are Probably Hypnotized

While the Bowdens spiral of control, in the ending of episode 2, Tom gets a new home and while he’s getting a feel of the place with his dog by his side, he sees his wife and the grown-up version of his unborn child sitting across from him. As his mind starts glitching out, the episode cuts to credits. So, what’s going on with Max? For starters, I don’t think the green jacket woman is a figment of Max’s imagination because she clearly ran into Anna. Is that green jacket woman working with Max? That’s where it gets tricky because there are moments where it genuinely seems like Max doesn’t know about the attacks that are happening on Anna’s family. But then again, he says stuff that is associated with Zack. On top of all that, there’s the black magic thing going on. Hence, what I feel is going on is that that green jacket woman has some kinda vendetta against Anna and she is using Max to get her revenge on Anna. I think this mysterious woman is some kinda hypnotist and she has both Zack and Max under some spell. She’s the one talking to Zack as AngelX and she’s feeding the words that AngelX says into Max’s mind (via hypnosis) so that Anna thinks that it’s Max who’s talking to Zack as AngelX. I might be completely wrong and it’s possible that the green jacket woman is actually trying to protect Anna and her family from Max’s wrath. However, until proven otherwise, I’m gonna stick with my theory that that green jacket woman is the real antagonist and she’s using Max’s hatred towards Anna to hurt her and avenge whoever she thinks Anna has wronged.
