'The Marked Woman' Movie Ending Explained: What Happened To Clara?

[Spoiler Alert] The Marked Woman’s ending was about Ripoll, Clara, and Zarate finding out the true identity of the man named Gaston, what kinda illegal business he was involved in, and what he had done to Lucia (Clara’s sister). Lucia was Zarate’s informant and she was trying to bust a trafficking ring based in Algeciras. The gang that she had infiltrated had seemingly found out about her duplicitous nature and forced her to make a false confession about Zarate’s corrupt activities. Lucia was then being shifted to Barcelona but before going there, she secretly met Clara and gave her a piece of paper with Gaston’s real identity written on it. 3 months later, Clara was found in a shipping container with no memory of how she had gotten there. Ripoll and Zarate were assigned to her case and after overcoming several hurdles, Clara finally remembered that she had taken up a job at DominoMer, a shipping company, to find Lucia. Gaston and his gang used DominoMer as a front for trafficking women. The money that they earned from that was stored in a Bitcoin wallet. Clara had managed to hack into that wallet, changed its passkey, and memorized the new passkey. She had hoped that she’d be able to use that info as leverage to secure Lucia’s freedom. However, she was kidnapped and tortured, and the trauma gave her temporary amnesia. To make sure that she didn’t remember all that and give the info to the police, Gaston’s gang kept trying to apprehend her. Thankfully, she ended up confiding in Ripoll and Zarate about the covert work she had done. How did they act on it? Let’s find out.

Flaco Was Actually Gaston

In addition to the details about the real purpose of the DominoMer, the Bitcoin wallet, and how she intended to rescue Lucia, Clara remembered one more thing: the UNUT shipment. Yeah, while trying to interrogate a guy named Rojas, who was in cahoots with Gaston, Clara was kidnapped a second time and taken to a yacht. One of Rojas’ henchmen, who was standing guard over Clara, assumed that she was unconscious and ended up talking about the UNUT shipment. As per Clara, he said that details of the content of that shipment had been leaked. So, they were gonna get rid of it because they didn’t have a shortage of replacements. Based on that info, Clara, Ripoll, and Berta (from the National Police from Algeciras) went to the shipping yard to see if they could find this UNUT shipment. Zarate had been ordered to return to Algeciras because an Internal Affairs investigation had been started against him based on Lucia’s video. Flaco, Zarate’s colleague, didn’t go back with him because, well, he was actually Gaston and he was an integral part of the human trafficking ring that was functioning via DominoMer. Hence, he began tailing Clara, Ripoll, and Berta in the hopes of getting a hold of Clara and extracting the passkey from her. When the women started knocking on each container at the shipping yard, Flaco got a message from Zarate was coming there as well because bringing this nexus to an end, as well as finding Lucia, was much more important to him than proving his innocence to the Internal Affairs department.

So, Flaco let the ladies do their thing while he stalled Zarate. While convincing Zarate to resume his journey to Algeciras, Flaco let it slip that he knew about Lucia’s Barcelona assignment, which brought Zarate to the realization that Flaco was Gaston. Flaco admitted that he was the one who had forced Lucia to make that video incriminating Zarate because she had learned that Flaco was involved in this human trafficking operation. The objective was to get Zarate to stop looking further into that nexus and that would have been achieved if Zarate went for the Internal Affairs hearing. Given how Zarate was still knee-deep in this DominoMer case, he was present in Barcelona, and he had learnt about Flaco’s true identity, he knew that he had no way of getting out of this pit in one piece. Since Flaco wanted the passkey from Clara, Zarate knew that if Flaco got a hold of her, he’d immediately kill her after getting what he wanted. So, to keep Flaco away from Clara, Zarate revealed that he had the photo of the mirror on which Clara had etched the passkey. He used that as leverage to get Flaco to put down the gun that he was pointing at Zarate (Zarate put down his gun as well as an added bonus). When the gun was out of Flaco’s reach and Flaco was close enough to Zarate, Zarate threw away the phone, thereby engaging him in a fight.

Clara Killed Flaco

Zarate couldn’t get the better of Flaco and he ended up shooting Zarate. While all this was going on, Clara, Ripoll, and Berta had found the UNUT shipment and were in the process of rescuing the girls who had been stashed in there. That’s when they heard the gunshots and Ripoll rushed to the spot where Zarate’s body lay, while Clara and Berta stayed with the girls. As Zarate’s soul left his body, he told her that Lucia was dead and that Flaco was Gaston. Speaking of Flaco, he had made his way to the spot where Clara, Berta, and the girls were. Clara confronted him before he could get to Berta and the girls. As soon as she understood that Flaco would kill everyone in that shipping yard after he got the passkey, she ran away so as to drag Flaco away from Berta and the girls. She probably would have kept running until she had taken Flaco out of the shipping yard, but when Flaco revealed that he had killed Lucia, Clara fell to her knees. That said, she refused to give up the passkey. As Flaco was about to start a classic villain rant, Ripoll snuck on him and kneecapped him. Flaco fell down and his gun slipped out of his hands. So, Clara took the gun, killed Flaco, and then ran away as Ripoll just watched all this unfold before her eyes. As the sun rose on a new day, and the police and medics arrived at the shipping yard to take stock of what had transpired over night, Ripoll quietly sat in the patrol vehicle and listened to the voice message her brother had sent her right before dying by suicide.

Ripoll imagined her brother sitting in the backseat as she pressed play and heard him talk about how, when they were kids, their father used to send Ripoll to get cigarettes. Since Ripoll didn’t want her brother to be alone with their dad, she used to make excuses to get her brother to come to the shop with her. That showed how protective Ripoll was of her brother and, before dying, he wanted to assure her that his death was not on her. After playing that message, Ripoll deleted the voice message and her brother’s ghost (who followed her everywhere she went) also disappeared. The Marked Woman didn’t really delve into the circumstances of Ripoll’s brother’s death but it was evident that he was the victim of some kind of child abuse. It could have been sexual assault or physical harm; we don’t really know. Regardless of how their childhood went, I think Ripoll was glad that both she and her brother were in a safe place, away from their abusive dad. And that comfort sort of blindsided her and kept her from seeing that trauma has a way of sneaking up on you. So, while she thought that her brother was not in a dark place anymore, it was evident that his mind had spiralled out of control. There was no way to bring him back but I guess Ripoll thought that if she could help out Clara and the women that were being trafficked by Flaco and his gang, she’d redeem herself a bit. She clearly succeeded at that but was her pain gone? No, and I think the pain of losing someone should never go away because it is a sign of how much you loved them when they were around.

Clara Had Become A Vigilante

In The Marked Woman’s ending, the narrative jumped forward in time by 8 months. Ripoll went to her office and while going through her inbox, she found an email from Alicia (the fake name that Clara used when she got a job at DominoMer) that had pictures that proved Flaco’s involvement in the DominoMer trafficking ring as well as scanned documents of all the people who had been trafficked. This probably showed that while Flaco had been killed, the nexus was still alive, and Clara was working in the shadows to take it down. As Ripoll was parsing through the contents of that email, she got a call from Clara. Earlier in the movie, when Clara was in the hospital, Ripoll had called her on the phone whilst standing at a spot which could be seen from the window in Clara’s room. But Ripoll didn’t expose her location; she stayed silent so that Clara could listen to noise in the background and figure it out herself. I suppose it was Ripoll’s way of checking out how skilled Clara actually was even when she couldn’t remember her true identity. When Clara called up Ripoll, she employed the same trick to show that she remembered her trick, while also letting her know that she was around without uttering a word (because you never know if your phone is bugged). Once Ripoll spotted Clara and Clara saw Ripoll looking at her, she left.

In the eyes of the law, Clara was a fugitive. She would never be able to live a normal life and she won’t be able to hold a job that would allow her to help people who were being exploited by men like Flaco. Lucia had supposedly died trying to make the world a better place for women and it was evident that Clara was determined to do the same as a vigilante and a force for good. Much like Ripoll, I feel that Clara blamed herself for Lucia’s death. She kicks herself for not rescuing her and then losing her memory. As a vigilante, maybe she hopes to redeem herself to a certain extent and make sure that Lucia’s death doesn’t go in vain By the way, if you think that Lucia might still be alive because we haven’t seen her dead body, you are not alone. The golden rule of entertainment is that until you have seen a character die as explicitly as possible, that too on-screen, you shouldn’t accept that that character is dead. Maybe Clara thinks so too and she hopes to be reunited with her sister one day. If The Marked Woman gets a sequel, I guess we’ll see Clara getting info about Lucia being alive and launching a mission to rescue her from the clutches of the men who are holding her captive. Who knows? Maybe Lucia will be able to expose more police officers like Flaco who are involved in this human trafficking business. Is that something that you’d like to see?
