Every Major Game Is Getting Out of GTA VI’s Way

At last week’s Summer Games Fest in Los Angeles, dozens of upcoming titles were unveiled or dated — and the shadow running across all of it was a single game not shown at the event. Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S , and its gravitational pull on the rest of the release calendar is now plainly visible.

The final months of any year are traditionally the most lucrative window in gaming. It is the period when hardware is flying off shelves and spending is highest. This year, most major publishers have quietly vacated that window entirely.

A dense cluster of high-profile titles has materialised for September: Wolverine, Silent Hill: Townfall and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve are among more than a dozen significant releases expected that month. Star Wars Zero Company is slotted for 27 August. These are not games that missed a November release by accident. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, launching on 23 October, sits in what observers widely regard as the outermost viable slot before the Rockstar release makes everything around it irrelevant. Christopher Dring, founder of specialist outlet The Game Business, described the October window as “frequently cited as the latest you can release a game and not get sucked into that Rockstar black hole.”

Ampere Analysis put it in plainer commercial terms, projecting that GTA VI will be the “biggest premium release which will gather huge amounts of attention and engagement that will likely last until at least the new year.”

GTA VI is the eighth mainline entry in the franchise and returns to a modern Vice City with dual protagonists. It arrives more than 13 years after GTA V — a game that has sold over 200 million copies and remains the second best-selling video game in history. The bar of expectation is, to put it modestly, significant.

But what will it actually cost to play this thing?

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has indicated a price range of US$70 to US$80 for the standard edition , but Rockstar has not formally confirmed pricing, and no official regional figures have been announced. At current exchange rates, that translates to roughly RM330–380 for the base game — and that assumes the ringgit holds steady against the dollar in the months ahead. Regional pricing, special editions and any pre-order incentives remain unconfirmed.

The console question is equally pressing. GTA VI is built exclusively for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S , with no PC version announced — and based on Rockstar’s history with GTA V, a PC release likely will not arrive until late 2027 at the earliest. For anyone still on older hardware, this is a forced decision point.

That decision just got more expensive. From 1 May 2026, Sony implemented new recommended retail prices in Malaysia. The PS5 with disc drive rose from RM2,499 to RM2,799, the Digital Edition from RM2,069 to RM2,499, and the PS5 Pro from RM3,849 to RM3,999. Malaysian gamers who have been holding off on a console purchase — many of them specifically waiting for GTA VI — now face a steeper entry point than they anticipated even a month ago. At RM2,799 for the disc edition plus an estimated RM330–380 for the game, the full cost of playing GTA VI at launch is likely to exceed RM3,100 for anyone still without a current-generation console. That is before factoring in any accessories.

Gamers Hideout, a Malaysian retailer, has been accepting placeholder deposits for physical copies of GTA VI, though official pricing has not been set. Anyone putting down a deposit should treat it as a reservation, not a confirmed price lock.

Away from the GTA VI gravitational field, Summer Games Fest did surface some notable announcements. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is confirmed for spring 2027. A remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica — originally released in 2000 — is also slated for 2027 under the title Resident Evil Veronica. New original projects include 1666 Amsterdam from Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets and Gen Atlas from Japanese designer Fumito Ueda. Both sit outside the franchise-sequel economy that dominates most major announcements.

GTA VI has not yet launched. It has already reorganised an entire industry around its release date, reshaped a generation’s hardware buying decisions, and created a quiet queue of major titles all hoping to get out before November.
