Raakh Recap And Ending Explained: Do Sahil And Suman Get Justice?

Everyone has dreams in this world, but sadly, a lot of them remain unachieved; Director Prosit Roy has told a story about an unfulfilled wish like that in the Amazon Prime series, “Raakh.” Ashok is a retired army officer, and his wife Mona is a schoolteacher. The couple have two children, Sahil and Suman; the latter dreams of singing live on the radio. Although Sahil often makes fun of his sister, he is still a supportive and protective brother. On the day of her singing, when Suman wants to rush to the radio station, Sahil takes her there while the parents wait to hear their daughter’s performance on the radio. However, the transmission never plays her song; instead, Ashok and Mona hear Suman’s friend Deepa sing the last song of the evening. When Ashok reaches the station, he returns home anxious after learning that Sahil and Suman never arrived there. Their disappearance forces the police to begin an immediate search, and the case gets assigned to Sub Inspector Jayprakash Jatav, a young officer who really wants to make a mark. Wasting no time, Jayprakash arrives at the Arora household with his full team, ready to investigate.

Spoilers Ahead

Mona Snaps At Jayprakash

With both their children gone missing, Mona and Ashok are dead worried, understandably. When Jayprakash starts questioning them, Ashok answers most of the questions as he is calmer than Mona. As a Sub Inspector, Jayprakash is obligated to check every angle of the case before coming to any conclusion. That’s why he asks if something in the household is missing since Sahil and Suman have gone out, as in some cases, children flee after stealing from their home. This makes Mona snap at Jayprakash because she herself knows that her children are not thieves. Her panicked state does not allow her to look at the matter from Jayprakash’s perspective, and her reaction is absolutely valid.

What Makes Jayprakash Regret His Decision of pausing the search due to bad weather?

After getting the nod from his boss, IPS Officer Indranil, Jayprakash takes his team and searches in the less travelled areas of the neighborhood. He manages to catch Raj, a beggar who’s often involved in shady business and receives a tip from him which suggests that the missing children may be in the forest. Unfortunately, before they can go further into the forest, the heavy downpour forces his team to stop the search temporarily. Looking at the inclement weather, Jayprakash also gets convinced to stop and returns. When Sahil and Suman’s bodies are found in the morning, Jayprakash gets shocked; it seems that they have been killed and dragged into the forest. Unfortunately, the bodies happened to be found just a few hundreds of meters from the last point Jayprakash’s team searched. This causes him to regret his decision of stopping the search midway – Jayprakash thinks that he could’ve saved the children if he discovered them at night, but he is wrong, of course.

What Causes Indranil To Put His Faith On Jayprakash Again?

Despite being a senior in the field, Indranil is pressured by the Home Minister to solve the case as Sahil and Suman happen to be the children of a retired Army Officer. While Jayprakash and the investigators are doing everything in their power, they cannot get their hands on any physical evidence. So, Indranil tells Jayprakash that it is time to handover the case to Inspector Chauhan, who’s a seasoned police officer in the field. Desperate to keep the case in his hand, Jayprakash visits forensic expert Dr. Biswajit and finds out that the perpetrator used a sword to stab the children very deeply. A broken car mirror has also been found and there’s a residue of green paint on it, so there must be a car involved. While returning home, Jayprakash finds a green car hidden beneath the canopy of leaves in the forest. The car seats contain both the victims’ and the perpetrators’ blood, which means the children put up a serious fight before they died; this progress reinforces Indranil’s trust on Jayprakash.

Who Killed Sahil And Suman?

Sahil and Suman were on their way when they got a lift from Bagga, an elderly man who was going by scooter. They took Bagga’s help to get till the bus stand and when Sahil saw a green car coming that way, he stopped the car, asking for a lift. That car was driven by seasoned criminals Kumar and Rajjo. Both the car and the weapons they had were stolen. Kumar, aka Babu, was the one who decided to give Sahil and Suman a lift, with the intention of kidnapping them. After the two children got inside and understood what was happening to them, they tried their best to flee. Suman put Babu in a chokehold while Sahil was beating Rajjo but it was not enough. Sahil got injured while stopping Rajjo from using a sword. Later, Suman got raped by Babu in the forest. Babu and Rajjo killed the two children by repeatedly stabbing and dumping their bodies there.

Sahil and Suman’s Death Completely Breaks Their Parents

Ashok was slowly breaking apart while coping with the grief of his children. He cannot believe that the bodies in the forest are his children’s; that’s why, he hires a private investigator to leak the postmortem reports from the mortuary. Ashok gets shocked to find out that Suman has been raped and stabbed so many times. For the first time, he cries and as time goes by, Ashok desperately tries to find Sahil and Suman as if they are hiding somewhere. He loses track of time and one night, Jayprakash finds Ashok standing in the woods alone, on the exact same spot where the bodies have been found. Mona cannot accept that Sahil and Suman are dead; when their bodies are brought in their house, she claims that they are not her children and shuts herself out. She is trying to act normal, and make herself believe that she is stuck in time, waiting to hear Suman sing live on the radio station. Mona’s heart has turned to stone and soon, the school principal orders her to stay at home because she has been acting like a robot all day. Mona finally breaks down on a rainy night when she looks at her children’s belongings and their empty beds.

How Did Babu And Rajjo Get The Swords?

Rajjo and Babu had been searching for money because they were tired of being poor but they weren’t ready to do hard work. Instead, they tried robbing a house and when they couldn’t find any luxurious item, they escaped with a child named Johnny. Babu then tried to extract a hefty ransom from the family but had to quit when the police sent a mole dressed as Johnny’s father. Babu lost his cool, killed the child and upon Rajjo’s request, they came to Mumbai, seeking shelter in Pyare Mohan’s house. Pyare Mohan, a singer, used to sing in a bar and got bullied by Ballu Sodhi. Sodhi targeted Pyare and wanted to get intimate with him. After Babu and Rajjo raid Sodhi’s house and beat him up, they find the swords hung on the wall, which belonged to Ballu’s great grandfather, Chooranwala. They killed Ballu and escaped with one sword, which they later used to stab Suman and Sahil to death.

Jayprakash Fights with Ghanshyam

Ghanshyam, Jayprakash’s father, is a former constable who’s also an efficient cook – he makes the best “mutton curry.” Even after retiring from the police, Ghanshyam often goes to the station to treat the policemen with mutton curry. This seems good from his side, as Ghanshyam wants to stay in contact with the seniors but for Jayprakash, this is embarrassing. Jayprakash feels that he gets cases and occasional praises not because he is competent but his father’s mutton curry. He fights with Ghyansham to make him understand the thin line between flattering and appeasing.

Babu Had Always Been A Monster

Babu was a problem child back when he was in school; he used to torture kids by putting marbles in their mouths and pushing them inside a well. One day, Babu tried making peace with his mother by offering a pot of honey. But when one of the students exposed him for stealing the jar Babu killed him by trapping the poor boy in a bathroom full of bees. Babu then had to spend six years in a Juvenile Correctional Home and by the time he came out, he found his mother living a new life, with a husband and a child. His mother tried her best to drive him away because she knew that Babu was a monster, but he was there to burn down the whole house. It’s unclear if the child survived or not but Babu burned his mother’s body and face, leaving her scarred for the rest of her life. Even after killing Johnny, Suman and Sahil, Babu doesn’t stop there. He beats a couple up, harasses a woman and escapes with their dog, Jimmy. Babu also kills his lover Meena, who was a nurse at a government hospital. Later, he betrays his longtime friend, Jimmy, and escapes with the latter’s honeymoon tickets. When he meets Rajjo, who was hiding in his village all this time, they use those tickets to go to Agra. Rajjo and Babu terrorize an elderly couple and stay in their bungalow as the police have already made sketches of their faces.

Why Does Jayprakash Fight With Nisar?

Nisar is a struggling reporter at Delhi Nama, a leading newspaper; she is an underdog, just like Jayprakash. She is desperately searching for new stories and without something innovative, the Editor will not give her credit or a byline in the publication. Since Nisar is friends with Jayprakash from way before, she has discussed it and they have worked together in other cases before. While Jayprakash is away, Nisar seeks help and information from other police officers to build a good news piece. Jayprakash fights with Nisar because he feels he is the only one who’s facing difficulties in his job. He wants Nisar to get her leads from elsewhere, instead of roaming around the police station because he is already struggling to keep the case.

What Makes Jayprakash Disobey Indranil And Visit Agra?

Indranil gets called by the Home Minister and gets instructed to stop Jayprakash from handling the case anymore. However, by this time, Jayprakash has already discovered the source of the sword, known about Rajjo and Babu’s criminal stints. He has also raided Jimmy’s house and Jayprakash knows that the two perpetrators are in Agra. Since he is not ready to just give it up and assist Inspector Chauhan, Jayprakash disobeys Indranil and flies to Agra in search of Rajjo and Babu. He wants to prove his worth and bring those criminals to justice, by hook or crook. He is not armed and has travelled in his own capacity because Jayprakash is technically suspended.

Why does Solanki Listen To Jayprakash?

Inspector Solanki, who controls the Agra Police Station, feels strange to see Jayprakash arrive at the station on behalf of Delhi Police because he has not expected them to act so fast. Solanki does not know that Jayprakash is not here officially; when he finds out, he restricts him from going out of the station. However, when they receive a tip on Rajjo and Babu being spotted in an unofficial arms dealer’s shop, Solanki finds it difficult to call Delhi for assistance as the phone lines start malfunctioning. Solanki also understands that he doesn’t have the manpower to finish the job; since Jayprakash is a competent officer and agrees to take all responsibility, he allows him to go. Just when Rajjo and Babu are about to slip away by boarding a train, the team catches them. Jayprakash catches Rajjo and beats his head against the compartment. A passenger knocks Babu down and Jayprakash beats him unconscious before Agra police arrest the criminals.

Do Sahil and Suman Get Justice In The End?

Rajjo and Babu have committed multiple counts of kidnapping, assault and murder, and the public erupts in protests, demanding death penalties for them. Jayprakash wants to let them out so that they are beaten to death by the public because that’s what they deserve. To everyone’s relief, the judge instructs Rajjo and Babu to be hanged till they die. The courtroom hails the Judge as the criminals are being taken back to jail where they will count the days until they will be hanged. Jayprakash gets praised by Indranil for his job and Nisar’s news piece on the murder case gets printed on the first page of Delhi Nama. This landmark judgement will remain as an example for other criminals and it has brought an end to the injustice against Suman and Sahil. But no judgement can ever provide complete relief to Ashok and Mona, or make their grief go away. They have lost their only children to these monsters who took advantage of Sahil and Suman. Ashok and Mona will have to spend the rest of their lives with just memories, the empty rooms, pictures and the belongings of their children. Towards the end of the series, the director shows us that in a perfect world, Sahil and Suman never boarded the green car; instead, they raced to the radio station, got drenched and the latter reached first, like always. Suman got to sing her song on the radio as she was not late and replaced by anyone. In that alternate reality, Ashok and Mona are living happily with Suman and Sahil.
