Selangor will observe a special public holiday on 1 September, after emerging as overall champions of the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma), giving the state a four-day Merdeka weekend.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the holiday at the Sukma closing ceremony after Selangor finished top of the medal standings as host state.

The contingent won 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals, for a total of 245 medals; swimmers led the charge with 20 gold medals in the pool.

It was Selangor’s first overall Sukma title in a decade.

A Four-Day Break, With Different Rules

1 September falls immediately after National Day on Monday, 31 August.

Combined with the Saturday and Sunday weekend, the declaration creates a four-day break from 29 August to 1 September.

The holiday applies in Selangor under the state’s authority to declare public holidays under the Holidays Act 1951.

Under Section 9(1) of the Holidays Act 1951, a state authority may appoint a day to be observed as a public holiday within its state.

Government offices and schools in the state are expected to observe the holiday, subject to operational notices.

Private-sector employees should refer to their employers’ public-holiday schedules and employment arrangements.
