Selangor postpones National Sports Day celebrations due to haze

STATE and district-level National Sports Day (HSN) 2026 celebrations across Selangor, scheduled for tomorrow, have been postponed due to the increasingly worrying haze situation.

Selangor State Executive Councillor for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship, Mohd Najwan Halimi, said the decision was made with the safety and health of the public as a priority, particularly for participants, staff, volunteers, children, and those more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution.

He noted that Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in several areas of Selangor have reached unhealthy levels, posing a risk to the public should physical activities proceed under current conditions.

"The state government's stance is clear: the safety and health of the people must take precedence over considerations to proceed with any program.

"The National Sports Day celebration aims to foster a culture of active and healthy living; therefore, it should not proceed under conditions that could compromise public well-being," he said in a statement today.

He stated that the celebration, originally scheduled for October 10, has been postponed until a new date is announced.

Consequently, all implementing agencies, local authorities (PBT), district youth and sports offices, and participating partners are requested to take note of the postponement and make the necessary adjustments.

"The public is also advised to refer to official announcements for the latest information regarding the rescheduling of the program.

"The state government will continue to monitor the haze situation and be guided by the advice of relevant authorities in determining further measures.

"This postponement does not mean the commitment to the sports agenda has been set aside; rather, it reflects the responsibility to ensure that every sports initiative is carried out safely, without exposing the public to unnecessary health risks," he said. – October 9, 2026
