Apple to ship up to 1.5M OLED touchscreen MacBook Pros in 2027

A new report from TrendForce explores Apple’s impact on the OLED notebook market following the launch of its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, and the company’s own shipment prospects for 2027. Here are the details.

OLED suppliers compete for MacBook Air contracts

Apple yesterday announced the new touchscreen MacBook Pro, which features the same tandem OLED technology it first introduced with the M4 iPad Pro in 2024.

With two OLED layers stacked on top of each other, the technology delivers higher brightness than conventional single-layer OLED displays, while maintaining the deep blacks, high contrast ratios, and power efficiency that OLED is known for.

And while yesterday’s announcement made it official, Apple’s first touchscreen Mac has long been rumored through leaks, reports, and supply chain analyses.

In September 2025, for instance, The Elec reported that Samsung Display was preparing to begin mass production of 14-inch and 16-inch OLED panels for Apple’s MacBook Pro in the second quarter of 2026, with an estimated annual output of 2–3 million units.

Two months later, TrendForce predicted that OLED notebook market share would reach up to 12% between 2027 and 2028, partly driven by Apple’s expected adoption of the technology.

Then, earlier this year, TrendForce published an OLED roadmap predicting that Apple would introduce OLED displays to the MacBook Pro lineup in 2026, followed by the MacBook Air in 2029 (pushed back from 2027).

Now, TrendForce has published a new report with new shipment forecasts for Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro and the broader OLED notebook market.

According to the firm, Apple is expected to ship between 1.2 million and 1.5 million units of the new MacBook Pro in 2027. Meanwhile, global OLED notebook shipments are projected to “grow nearly 40% YoY in 2026, followed by another increase of more than 40% in 2027.”

From the report:

TrendForce also notes that the “new MacBook Pro’s premium starting price of US$2,899 for the 14-inch model, coupled with its initial availability alongside existing Mini-LED models, could temper near-term replacement demand.”

As for Apple’s first OLED MacBook Air, now expected to debut in 2029, TrendForce says LG Display, BOE, and TCL CSOT are currently competing to become display suppliers for the upcoming model, as the companies continue developing their OLED manufacturing capabilities.

Finally, TrendForce projects that global OLED notebook shipments will reach 46.6 million units by 2030, though year-over-year growth will slow to 30.8%, following a peak of 42.8% in 2028.
