Starbucks Malaysia Honors its 14th Annual Global Month of Good (GMOG) with Empowering CSR Initiatives

At Starbucks, it’s not just about coffee, it’s about nurturing the limitless possibilities of human connection. Every April, Starbucks partners (employees) around the globe exercise daily acts of kindness, resilience, courage, joy, and making good things happen. For the 14th year, Starbucks Malaysia celebrates the comeback of its GMOG program by partnering up with local NGOs and Government bodies to give back and enrich the many local communities through six different CSR programs. From environmental conservation projects to initiatives supporting marginalized individuals, each program was a testament to their commitment to contribute positively to the planet and every community they serve.

Here are some highlights from this year’s Global Month of Good by Starbucks Malaysia:

1) Making a Difference, One Bubur Lambuk at a Time

Teaming up with What A Waste (WaW), the first Malaysian social enterprise dedicated to provide food rescue services and community support, the brand collaborated with them for the second consecutive Ramadan by preparing, cooking, and distributing Bubur Lambuk for B40 communities and uniformed bodies around the Klang Valley. This year, the initiative saw an overwhelming response, prompting them to hold two Bubur Lambuk volunteering sessions to accommodate the demand.

Prepared using a blend of rescued ingredients provided by WaW, this collaborative effort showcases Starbucks Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability and addressing food waste. The two sessions resulted in 2,620 packs of Bubur Lambuk being distributed. With the participation of 146 partners who volunteered their time, a total of 1,090 community service hours were contributed to this impactful cause.

To add more joy for the recipients, the brand also invited renowned celebrity Chef Dato’ Fazley Yaakob for a surprise visit during the first session to assist in giving away the Bubur Lambuk. Starbucks Malaysia also took the opportunity to donate 600 units of Dato’ Fazley X Starbucks food to those in need.

2) Honoring Our Heroes with a Cup of Gratitude

As a form of appreciation for the selfless dedication of our frontline heroes this Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Starbucks Malaysia took meaningful steps to express their heartfelt appreciation. With the support of its partners, they distributed beverages and light refreshments to approximately 500 frontliners in Hospitals, Police Stations and Fire & Rescue stations across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Pahang, and Johor Bahru.

By extending support to these frontline heroes, Starbucks Malaysia aims to nurture a culture of compassion and solidarity, reinforcing its belief in the power of collective action for the betterment of society. Through initiatives like these, they strive to foster a sense of belonging and appreciation to make a positive impact on those who tirelessly serve our communities.

3) Empowering Rural Communities in Sabah Through Sustainable Agriculture

With a firm commitment to addressing food insecurity in Sabah’s rural areas, Starbucks Malaysia received a grant from Starbucks Foundation, the brand’s global charity arm, amounting to approximately RM95,000 (USD 20,000). This significant funding paved the way for the establishment of an organic farm nestled in the serene landscapes of Kampung Tegudon, Kadamaian, Kota Belud, Sabah.

Following the allocations of the grant, Starbucks Malaysia rallied 20 passionate partners to volunteer alongside 25 local beneficiaries at the farm. Through hands-on engagement, volunteers collaborated with indigenous farmers cultivating not only crops but also a sense of community resilience.

The impact of this initiative extends far beyond the fields. By embracing sustainable agricultural practices, the organic farm becomes a beacon of hope, fostering self-sufficiency and economic empowerment within the community. Through education and practical involvement in farming activities, local residents gain invaluable skills and knowledge, paving the way for long-term sustainability, prosperity, and a sense of community.

4) Hub for Deaf Individuals at Community Service for the Deaf (CSCD)

At the heart of Starbucks Malaysia’s dedication to CSR lies a deep commitment to the Deaf community. Having been the first to introduce the Starbucks Signing Store concept in the world, the company also showcases its support for the community by working together with The Community Service for the Deaf (CSCD), an NGO dedicated to empowering the Deaf community through a range of comprehensive support programs. Through educational initiatives, vocational training, and job opportunities, including their renowned social enterprise- Silent Teddies Bakery, CSCD works tirelessly to uplift and empower Deaf individuals. In an effort to empower CSCD’s impactful work, Starbucks Malaysia has long supported their mission, including contributions from the sales of their beloved Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookies made by Deaf bakers and sold at all Starbucks stores since 2018.

Recently, CSCD has transformed its center into a vibrant hub for Deaf individuals, featuring a welcoming café and classrooms for ongoing education and sign language proficiency. To celebrate the re-opening of the center, Starbucks Malaysia took the opportunity to donate essential furniture. With 28 dedicated volunteers contributing 84 community service hours during the session, Starbucks Malaysia pledges to organize more volunteering sessions to assist in enhancing the center in the future.

5) Committed to Serve the Deaf Society

Starbucks Malaysia proudly took part in the Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD) Charity Food Fair 2024, organized by one of their Signing Store partners, the Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD) at the Association of Churches in Sarawak. The event aimed to support the operational costs and projects for SSD, dedicated to enriching the lives of Deaf individuals in Sarawak.

Officiated by YB Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government of Sarawak State, Starbucks Malaysia proudly sponsored 200 Grande-sized Frappuccinos to fuel the festivities at the charitable event. This sponsorship not only added to the success of the occasion but also exemplified their commitment to community welfare and inclusivity. The event garnered remarkable support, raising approximately RM150,000 to advance the initiatives of the Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD). This substantial contribution will positively impact the lives of at least 3,000 Deaf individuals, empowering SSD to further its invaluable efforts within the community.

6) Building a Sustainable Future Together

In celebration of Earth Day, Starbucks Malaysia collaborated with Citta Mall for the H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Planet Everyday) event, dedicated to raising environmental awareness and fostering sustainable practices within the community. The event featured a range of activities focused on sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives, including interactive workshops and educational programs aimed at encouraging waste reduction in daily routines.

During this impactful event, Starbucks actively contributed to the sustainability drive by donating used coffee grounds and milk cartons. These donations, aimed at promoting reuse and upcycling, serve as valuable resources for the public. The donated coffee grounds, for instance, can be repurposed for various applications, such as fertilizing plants and creating eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Likewise, the repurposing of tetra boxes offers opportunities for creative upcycling projects. Through these collaborative efforts, Starbucks Malaysia is committed to play an active role in combating climate change and safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Starbucks Malaysia deeply believes in the transformative power of collective action to drive positive change. Through their Global Month of Good initiatives, they are honored to have the opportunity to create meaningful impacts in the communities where they are privileged to serve.
