Kon Yeow to stay out of Penang DAP election

CHIEF Minister of Penang and state DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow has decided to stay out of the state party election on September 22.
At a specially convened press conference, he said he had decided not to defend his chairman’s post despite being notified in a letter from DAP’s headquarters on August 27 that he had been nominated.
“After much consideration, I have decided not to accept the nomination to contest,” he said, adding that he would complete his term as Penang chief minister.
This, he said, was confirmed by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
Chow said the timing was perfect as a new state chairman would have more than three years to lead and prepare the party to face the next general election.
“I trust that the delegates will elect a strong state committee to continue the party’s political mission in the state,” he said.
The Batu Kawan MP also pointed out that he would still be a DAP vice-chairman despite bowing out of the state party leadership.
Chow also conveyed his appreciation to the party and its members for supporting him and giving him the opportunity to serve as state DAP chairman for the past 25 years.
On possible candidates to succeed him, Chow said the delegates would determine it in the September 22 party elections.
Penang created history by becoming the first state in the country to table and pass a motion setting a two-term limit for the chief ministership back in November 2018.
This is Chow’s second term as the chief minister.
Meanwhile, Anthony, in a statement, said he was aware of Chow’s decision not to defend his position as chairman.
“I respect his decision and stance for reform in the Penang DAP leadership after he led the Penang DAP state committee for 25 years.
“Before today’s announcement, he had discussed his wishes with me. It should be emphasised that his decision today does not affect the administration of the Penang government.
“He will continue to hold the position of Chief Minister of Penang until the end of this term by the provision of the state constitution which limits the position of chief minister to a maximum of two terms,” he said. – September 4, 2024.
