'Tell Me Lies' Season 2 Episode 6 Recap & Ending Explained: Was Lucy Still Obsessed With Stephen?
Episode 6 of Tell Me Lies season 2, is pretty much a Friendsgiving gone wrong. Heavy snowfall led to most students staying back on campus for the Thanksgiving weekend. Lucy was relieved; she could not imagine spending time together with her mother and her boyfriend, and the weather made it easier for her to avoid them. Leo too had no intention of going home. His bitter relationship with his father was the reason behind his disinterest. Evan and Wrigley were also staying back on campus. Bree and Pippa did not have any grand Thanksgiving plans either.
Stephen and Diana planned on spending Thanksgiving with Diana’s father in Connecticut. However, her LSAT score had impacted her relationship with her father, and they got into a heated argument over the phone. Diana told Stephen that her father did not wish to see her any time soon, and they had no choice but to cancel their plans. Stephen was upset; he had been looking forward to meeting Diana’s father to discuss law school. When Evan ran into Bree at the dining hall, he decided to organize a Friendsgiving party. He was still in love with her, and since his girlfriend, Molly, was supposed to be out of town, he thought it was a perfect opportunity to mingle with his ex.
Spoiler Alert
How did Stephen instigate Lucy?Lucy did not expect Stephen to attend the Friendsgiving dinner, and his sudden change of plan made her uncomfortable. Lucy was visibly nervous, but Leo helped her stay calm. Stephen was envious of Lucy and Leo’s relationship. Not that he had any intention of being with Lucy, but he simply could not see her happy. He tried to instigate Leo during the slapshot game, but Leo knew that Stephen wanted him to react, and even though it was tough, he kept his cool. Desperate to embarrass Leo, Stephen mentioned his ex-girlfriend, Becca. He asked Leo if he had told Lucy the reason behind their breakup, knowing very well that it could create a misunderstanding between Leo and Lucy. Leo explained to Lucy that Becca had cheated on him with Stephen, and that had led to their breakup. The truth made Lucy feel uneasy. She wondered if Leo got into a relationship with her to get back at Stephen. Leo tried to help Lucy understand that her getting upset was exactly what Stephen wanted. And he was hurt when Lucy, for a second, considered that he was with her to make Stephen jealous. Leo loved Lucy, but her crooked judgment made him rethink their relationship.
Stephen went on to instigate Lucy by adding that she had been obsessed with him and was crazy enough to verbally assault his sixteen-year-old sister. Lucy accused Stephen of being a psychopath, and she added that one day everyone would realize the kind of person Stephen was and they would leave him, and he would be all alone. Lucy lost control of herself when Diana stated that Lucy made it easy for Stephen to mistreat her, and she slapped Diana in the face. The Thanksgiving party was over even before the dinner began.
Why did Leo break up with Lucy?Leo knew that Lucy had been in a toxic relationship, but he did not realize how problematic she was. He was trying his best to become a better person, and while he managed to keep his cool, he was surprised to see how easy it was for Stephen to instigate Lucy. He believed that Lucy continued to care about Stephen, and that was precisely why it was so easy for him to get under her skin. When Leo pointed out Lucy’s toxic behavioral pattern, she got defensive and stated that Leo was equally problematic. She thought he too secretly held a grudge against Stephen, which was why he did not tell her about Becca. Leo never thought his relationship with Becca was something he had to discuss in detail with Lucy. But that was not a satisfying explanation for her, and Lucy added that she believed he hid things from her. When Leo wanted to know what she was trying to imply, she explained that his bitter relationship with his family was something that he never spoke about, and she was tired of his vagueness. After seeing his aggressive side, she believed he owed it to her to explain the reason behind his anger issue. Lucy’s comment took Leo by surprise. He thought they were in love, and he did not realize that she’d never truly trusted him. Leo did not speak about his father because he hated revisiting his past, and perhaps he needed more time to discuss his childhood with Lucy. But she did not give him the time to do so, and to satisfy her curiosity, he explained that his father had physically abused him and his mother when he was a kid. One day, he fought back, and his father stopped hurting him. He often had to resort to violence to keep his father in check, and that was a habit that he was trying hard to unlearn.
At the end of Tell Me Lies episode 6, Leo broke up with Lucy. He realized it was impossible to be in a peaceful, loving relationship with her. Lucy’s constant need for drama and her obsession with Stephen were enough reasons for Leo to step back. He knew that she would only bring out the worst in him, and she could ruin his healing journey. The breakup left Lucy devastated. It was only after he left her that she perhaps realized that she should have been more sensitive. But it was already too late.
Was Lucy still obsessed with Stephen? At the beginning of episode 6 of Tell Me Lies season 2, we find out that even after eight years, Lucy continued to be obsessed with Stephen. She was not only bothered by his presence but felt the compulsive need to make him want her all over again. Or to have him be envious of her present relationship at the very least. At Bree’s pre-wedding parties, Stephen did not make any obvious attempt to get under Lucy’s skin, but somehow Lucy was not convinced by his whole ‘changed man’ image. To find out if he would still respond to her invitation, she texted him to meet her by the swimming pool. Stephen smirked; it was as if he knew Lucy would falter, and he had been waiting for it. Upon reaching the hotel’s swimming pool, Stephen realized why Lucy had texted him. She wanted him to watch her have passionate sex with her partner in the pool.
Lucy could not function without Stephen’s attention. She craved the madness and the toxicity even though she knew it was bad for her. She was addicted to him, and he continued to have a strange power over her that she simply could not resist. Was Stephen a changed man? The fact that he took an interest in secretly meeting Lucy even though he was engaged suggests that he was just the same.
The ending of episode 6 hinted at the possibility that something changed in Stephen when Lucy begged him to leave her alone. She was completely defeated after Leo left her, and when she ran into Stephen, she expressed that she could not understand why she was being punished when the only mistake she made was to love Stephen with all her heart. Seeing Lucy in such a vulnerable condition and admitting she loved him for who he was affected Stephen emotionally. Maybe for the first time, he felt bad for her, but then again, it’s Stephen, and we cannot expect him to do anything right or remotely good. Maybe this would prompt Stephen to romantically pursue Lucy again, and even though Lucy would hate herself for hooking up with Stephen, she would find it impossible to stop. With Leo gone, Lucy’s self-hatred would only get worse, and she might end up convincing herself that she deserved to be mistreated. Lucy’s redemption arc has once again become a far-fetched dream that seems unlikely to ever come true.
Was Bree in contact with Oliver?Evan tried his best to win over Bree, but the Thanksgiving party turned into a messy affair. After Molly stayed back, Evan found himself in an awkward position with his ex and his present girlfriend in the same room. He was not in love with Molly, but he was afraid of upsetting her (that was why he was in a relationship with her as well). He also could not hide his feelings for Bree, and Molly left after slapping him in the face when she realized he was still into Bree.
Evan found out that Bree was dating someone else. He was heartbroken, and he decided to ask Bree about the man she was dating. Evan had a tough time accepting that, so soon after they broke up, Bree had started to see someone, and she was serious about him. He was genuinely concerned when she mentioned that the man she loved was 45. He thought it was not normal for a man in his mid-forties to pursue a nineteen-year-old. He assumed that the man knew about Bree’s childhood in foster homes, and he could sense her desperate need for a father figure. Evan thought he was taking advantage of her, but Bree disagreed.
The next morning, when Oliver contacted Bree, she was elated. She was into him, and she did not think it was weird for a middle-aged man to date a college student. She was convinced that their love was pure. In this episode, we also discovered that, in 2015, Bree was still in touch with Oliver. He did not want her to get married, but she was tired of being with someone who could not wholly commit to her, and that was why she had decided to marry Evan. She wanted to start her own family, and Evan could give her the life she dreamt of. Will Oliver turn up at Bree’s wedding? Things are about to get quite dramatic for sure!
While none of the characters in the series are to root for, you cannot help but adore Pippa and Diana’s relationship. Theirs was a sweet romance that began during their college days, and even after eight years, they were still together. Their relationship did not stem from jealousy or frustration; it started with a sense of compassion, respect, and camaraderie, and that was why it worked out.
