MoE: Afghanistan delegation visit followed Foreign Ministry’s guidance and advice

THE Education Ministry today said the visit programme for the Afghanistan Education Ministry delegation was conducted based on the guidance and advice of the Foreign Ministry.

In a statement, it said it had also received support services from other relevant ministries and agencies for security screening and continuous monitoring until the programme concluded.

"This visit is an effort to support Malaysia's foreign policy direction towards Afghanistan, with the Malaysian Government ready to assist in terms of capacity development in the fields of health and humanitarian efforts, which will contribute to the social progress of the country," it said.

DAP chairman and Bagan MP, Lim Guan Eng had earlier raised concerns over the recent visit by the Afghanistan Education delegation to the MoE.

"We showcased an inclusive education system focused on increasing access and equity across socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity, and geography. 

"This includes eliminating gender disparities and ensuring equal and inclusive access at all education levels," it said.

"The MoE's commitment aligns with the statement made by the Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, last year, who expressed readiness to enhance cooperation with Afghanistan. At the same time, education rights cannot be denied.

"Therefore, Malaysia is committed to and fully supports the right to education for women and access to education for girls," it said.

Lim had earlier said that the delegation's visit raised questions as it was not informed to the public, including Deputy Minister of Education, Wong Kah Woh.

"I raised this matter because I am not only a representative of the people, but someone who cares about human rights, especially about women's education rights.

"I would like to ask why the Ministry of Education (MOE) allowed such a visit from a country that does not have diplomatic relations with Malaysia?.

"More importantly, a country that restricts women from studying in high school and university. Afghanistan is the only country in the world that prohibits women from studying in high school and university.

"The United Nations (UN) has condemned Taliban-led Afghanistan that such actions are the same as gender apartheid. So, I hope an explanation can be given to the people of this country because we are very concerned," he told a press conference in Parliament. - November 21, 2024
