'Suspicion' Movie Ending Explained & Recap: Did Voke Learn the Identity of Lolu's Killer?
Directed by Tosin Igho, the Nigerian supernatural crime thriller, Suspicion, explores Africa’s heritage of voodoo and black magic to set up an intriguing murder mystery by incorporating themes of corruption, betrayal, sacrifice, and friendship. While the movie might lack a bit in style, with budget being the main hindrance, it surely makes up for it by presenting a compelling narrative to back up decent performances by the leads and manages to form an emotional connection for the viewers to root for the characters as well. The cinematography could have assisted the ambition and potential of the story in a better way, but nevertheless, Suspicion might be what it takes to propel more such ventures to dive into the native African mythology and culture.
Spoilers Ahead
Voke’s Connection With OccultThe story focuses on Voke and his relationship with black magic from an early age, as his parents, Ede and Obatere, are adept practitioners of the occult. As the beginning of the movie highlights, Voke was made invulnerable to any conventional physical harm as his mother had performed a black magic ritual on him for his safety, and due to being exposed to black magic at an early age, Voke was imbued with multiple powers like supernatural sight and senses. However, it’s probably due to their association with black magic that a grown-up Voke shares a somewhat estranged relationship with his parents.
Voke lives with his girlfriend, Chisom, who recently lost her family in a car accident, although according to Voke, he can sense that there was more to the incident than assumed. Voke does odd jobs to earn a living and struggles to find a steady footing—much to the dismay of Chisom. Voke is godfather to his friend Rogba’s daughter, Lolu, and considers them to be part of his family as well. Things go south when a number of miscreants, who appear to be protected by black magic, kidnap Lolu, and failing to find clues about the identity or motivation of the abductors, Voke goes to seek help from his parents. After initial disagreements, Obatere gives in to his son’s request and tries to use black magic to locate Lolu, only to realize something much more powerful than her has blocked her sight, rendering it impossible for her to track down the kid. Worried sick for his daughter, a desperate and hopeless Rogba contemplates taking his life and goes to the edge of a cliff, and Voke arrives just in time to stop him from taking a rash decision, when Rogba is shot by an unknown assailant and falls over the cliff into the waterbody down below. Voke catches the assailant and kills him after being unable to find answers, but Rogba’s body is nowhere to be found. Voke’s misery continues as Lolu’s corpse is found, with organs missing from her body—and using his abilities, Voke is able to sense that the poor kid was used as a sacrifice in a black magic ritual. To top it all off, Chisom inexplicably leaves Voke, at the worst stage of his life. A devastated Voke returns to his mother, who consoles him and advises him to give up his pursuit of truth in this particular situation, as she fears there might be something insidious and powerful behind it all. Voke promises his mother that he will be careful, but refuses to stop his search for answers.
Thompson Group Murder InvestigationFour years later, Voke is using his talents to work as a paranormal investigator, handling the cases his friend Gbenga fixes him with. On one occasion, Gbenga takes him to Pius, who needs Voke to investigate the unnatural murder of an executive, Mr. Kayode, which took place in the office of their company, the Thompson Group. The chief of the company, Tony, initially shares his disapproval of Voke’s presence, but after getting acquainted with his unique talents, decides to employ him to find the culprit. Using his connection with the occult, Voke realizes that the murder had something to do with black magic, and the unknown perpetrator is somehow linked with Lolu’s murder as well. The hints left by the killer indicate Kayode’s murder was the first of five planned murders that are going to occur with the completion of a black magic ritual. Voke also gets to know that Chisom works at the same company and presently is married to Tony.
Voke’s initial suspicion falls upon Leke Thompson, a social media celeb/entrepreneur, son of one of the company’s founders, the late Lanre Thompson, who was voted out of his company and holds a grudge against the chief shareholders of the company. Taking the guise of a journalist, Voke goes to interview Leke and secretly records a conversation between Leke and his manager, which reveals that Leke blames Tony for his father’s murder, and he himself might be connected with Kayode’s murder. Voke also senses that Leke’s henchman, Laide, possesses the weapon that was used to murder Lolu, and he shares his suspicion with Tony, who orders an officer under his payroll to kill Leke and his every accomplice. It should be mentioned that Chisom was seen frequenting Leke’s house by Voke, and as the duo catch up, Chisom reveals she wasn’t in the best state of mind back then, and Voke failed to offer her a sense of security—which is why she ended up leaving him. It becomes clear that both of them have feelings for each other, but life has taken both of them down different paths already, from where there is no return. In the meantime, another employee of the office gets killed by the voodoo killer.
Getting Tony’s approval, Voke leads the cops under Tony’s payroll to apprehend Leke, only to find him, and all his accomplices, murdered by a mysterious masked assailant. The masked man survives every conventional attack, and Voke gets severely injured while protecting Chisom, who was present at the scene as well, from the killer. Chisom takes Voke back to her place, and following his instructions of voodoo rituals, manages to heal him in time. The duo get closer and rekindle their love; however, Chisom decides to return to Tony later on, as Voke goes to his mother to seek help. Voke worries for Chisom, with the killer still at large, but Chisom assures him that Tony has arranged measures to handle both regular and supernatural threats. However, things go sideways when the assailant easily kills the voodoo priest Tony had employed for his protection and butchers most of his henchmen, and a desperate Chisom calls Voke for help. To instantly teleport using black magic, Voke asks for his mother’s help, who is unwilling to share the secret with him—knowing the ritual would take years from Voke’s life in exchange. However, Voke’s father, Ede, who had done the same for Obatere in the past, convinces her to share the secret. Voke teleports directly to Tony’s mansion, a bit older than earlier, and engages in a battle with the killer. Using Voke’s instructions of imbuing the bullets with voodoo magic, Chisom manages to shoot the killer to death; moments later, Voke has unmasked the killer to reveal his true identity as Rogba—who is unable to recognize his old friend till the last moment of his life. Voke is in shambles, and none of the theories he had jotted out regarding the investigation seem to fall in place, but he takes peace in the fact that at least Chisom remained unharmed and saved his life at the end.
Did Voke Learn the Identity of Lolu’s Killer? However, that night, Voke is attacked by the thrall of a pregnant voodoo practitioner, and following the trail, he reaches Onajite, the woman who sent the thrall after him, and her voodoo priest father, Edojah. Voke is shocked to learn that Onajite blames him for the murder of her husband, Rogba, and he gets to know the shocking truth behind the entirety of the situation from Edojah. After falling off the cliff, Rogba had survived and was rescued by Onajite, who nursed him back to health. However, Rogba had lost his memories, and Onajite offered him a chance to start his life anew with her. Edojah could sense something was tormenting Rogba, and using his abilities, he had learned that the spirit of Lolu was asking her father for help. Lolu was sacrificed by the five executives of the Thompson Group to a primordial evil entity, who provided them monetary gain in exchange for the life of the poor girl. However, even after her demise, Lolu’s torment didn’t end, as her spirit was going to be damned after five years, as the entity would have a new sacrifice from its five followers after the specified time period. To help his daughter’s spirit break free from the tormented existence, Rogba decided to kill each of the responsible members of the Thompson Group, and Edojah helped him with his voodoo skills to take revenge against the culprits. Edojah further reveals that this cult of five has been at this for a long time, and Lolu is not their first, or for that matter, last victim. Now due to Voke’s interference, Rogba’s quest for vengeance is cut short, with the final member of the cult still left alive. A remorseful Voke offers his assistance to complete Rogba’s mission, and Edojah reveals the identity of the final member of the cult to be Lolu—who might be preparing for another sacrifice as they speak, which will send Lolu’s spirit for eternal damnation.
Voke’s world is turned upside down after this revelation, but he manages to pull himself together and instantly teleports to Chisom, aging a lot in the process. He finds Chisom to be preparing for another sacrifice, and as he confronts her, she confesses that her father was a member of the cult, and his refusal to sacrifice his wife to the entity resulted in Chisom’s entire family getting killed by the accident. She was forced into taking the role of her father and was bound to serve the entity’s demands. However, turning a deaf ear to Chisom’s pleas and false sentimental appeals, Voke recognizes that killing Lolu was a choice that Chisom and the other members of the cult made very consciously for their personal gain, especially when Chisom had the chance to approach him for help and seek other options. Chisom still tries to sway Voke’s mind and tries to convince him to sacrifice her newest captive—but enraged and distraught by her betrayal, Voke ends up killing her by plunging the ritual dagger into Chisom’s body. Thereby, Voke frees Lolu’s spirit from eternal damnation, and the entity reveals itself in front of him. By the looks of it, the entity appears to be a voodoo god, either Papa Legba or Baron Samedi, and he restores an aged Voke back to health. This explains why Voke’s mother was unable to counter the immensely strong magic of the entity in the first place. Voke gets reasonably curious as to why the entity restored his health, to which the entity answers before departing that he will make use of Voke when the time is right.
As the movie comes to an end, it is revealed that Baron Samedi/Papa Legba, the entity, was orchestrating everything from secret in the guise of Pius for Voke to end up in his control. The entity had Rogba shot in the first place and bribed the divers to hide Rogba’s body from Voke—thereby creating the crisis and the entire murder mystery setup, which, like a domino effect, resulted in Voke being taken under his influence—just like different incarnations of Ghost Rider in “Marvel Comics” were manipulated by Mephisto. After all, even among voodoo practitioners, Voke was unique, as he had multiple abilities, as revealed previously by Obatere. If a sequel to Suspicion is made in the future, it will be really exciting to see how the entity uses Voke to do his bidding and whether Voke and his family manage to build a counter to his influence.
