REPORT: Local Porn Stars On The Rise, Authorities Concerned For The Safety Of Children
By ellephant
Based on recent findings, there has been a rise in homegrown pornographic content on social media.
In Malaysia, local figures have gained large followings by promoting explicit content on platforms like Telegram, X, TikTok, Instagram, and Tumblr, taking advantage of lax content moderation and privacy features.
NST did a report uncovering at least 20 accounts actively sharing "made-in-Malaysia" adult material.
These accounts often use live functions to monetize interactions, charging fees for replies, private sessions, and exclusive content. Some even create storylines to cater to specific fantasies.
The trend is growing rapidly, with local content now surpassing foreign content in popularity.
Authorities are particularly concerned about the increasing exposure of children to explicit material, with cases of young children, even as young as 5 years old, being targeted.
The growth of "darkside accounts" has also raised alarms, as many are run by students seeking easy income, and suspensions are ineffective as new accounts quickly emerge.
Platforms like Telegram have become a hub for these illicit activities, where users are often scammed and forced to pay for access, only to have the admins disappear after receiving payment.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified several groups with tens of thousands of followers. These groups often feature explicit content and use layered systems to maintain secrecy, providing paid access to users.
Additionally, some accounts prey on vulnerable individuals with illegal material like child sexual abuse content.
Authorities are monitoring these activities through tools like the Internet Crime Against Children software, but challenges remain due to the lack of direct IP tracking on social media platforms.
Malaysia has also enacted new regulations requiring social media platforms with large user bases to be licensed starting in 2024 , in an effort to create a safer online environment.
