'Ferry 2' Ending Explained & Film Summary: Is Ferry Dead? What Happens To Jezebel?

Ferry 2 is a 2024 addition to Netflix’s Dutch action crime thriller franchise, Ferry, although the fact that this new presentation is a film while its offering last year was a series might be a bit confusing to viewers. While the first film of the same name and the following Ferry: The Series took us back to the early days of Ferry Bouman’s life and career, the sequel film takes place after the events from Undercover, in which the titular protagonist had been caught by the police. The plot here follows Ferry’s journey back to a life of crime and danger when a distressed family member asks for help, making him come out of retirement. Overall, Ferry 2 does not offer anything new or exciting, and the franchise is surely losing its charm, which is also why the creators take a certain step to freshen things up at the very end of the film.

Spoiler Alert

What is the Netflix film about?

Ferry 2 begins on the warm, sunny beaches of Costa Blanca, on the southern coast of Spain, where many senior citizens from across Europe go to spend their retirement days. Just like them, our protagonist, Ferry Bouman, is also living at the place, intending to spend the rest of his life here, with no worries about his former life. After all, Ferry had lived dangerously and had become a notorious criminal wanted by the law during his professional career. Belonging to a very modest background and fueled by rage at seeing his father abuse his mother on a daily basis, Ferry had decided to create a name and legacy for himself. When opportunities presented themselves, he took them straight on and found himself in the dangerous but profitable drug business in the Netherlands and Belgium.

As Ferry gained more experience in the field, he turned into a hardened drug dealer and gang leader who did not have to think twice before killing his rivals or torturing them whenever required. Thus, a few years later, Ferry Bouman established himself as the leader of the biggest drug gang operating not only in the region but internationally as well. As his products started getting exported all over Europe, Ferry also got involved in his fair share of murders and similar crimes, while remaining unfazed by the violent nature of his profession. He wanted to enjoy his days with the love of his life, Danielle, which gradually seemed like a distant dream to him. Despite having earned all the riches in the world, Ferry started to lose all the close ones in his family and group.

While he lost his dear sister, Claudia, first, when she passed away because of a tumor in her head, a police operation to catch him soon claimed the lives of his closest friends and accomplices in the drug business. Danielle left him as well, after realizing how morally corrupt he was, before one of his own employees, Dennis, sold him out to the police. As a result, Ferry was arrested and imprisoned for his crimes and then released a few months later. Despite being set free, he could not really return to his old life, and so Ferry fled to Spain, where he has been living ever since. As Ferry 2 takes off, he is seen living in a small community, currently playing the role of Santa Claus for the local kids and also trying to woo a local woman his age. But this calm and settled life is once again stirred up and disturbed when a relative from the family he yearned to be with so much turns up at his camper, looking for help.

Why does Jezebel come to Ferry?

When Ferry returns to his camper, taking a break from working as the local Santa Claus, and hearing the taunts of a few teenagers who do not really like him, he spots a young man standing outside, as if keeping watch. As he approaches him and asks him about his business, a young woman peeks out of the camper, and this happens to be Ferry’s grandniece, Jezebel. The protagonist’s beloved sister, Claudia, had passed away at a relatively young age because of a brain tumor, and her daughter, Sonja, also unfortunately got the same ailment. Sonja, too, passed away, leaving behind a young daughter of her own, Jezebel, who struggled to accept the loss when her father passed away as well, under mysterious circumstances. Although Ferry had always wanted to look out for his family, and especially for his sister’s granddaughter, Jezebel, he could not do so as the police were already pursuing him by this time.

Therefore, he is very pleased at seeing Jezebel at his camper, after eight long years, but then also correctly suspects that something might be wrong because of which she has come to him. Jezebel first calmly states that she wants fifty thousand euros from him, which she feels should be an appropriate amount to compensate for the patriarch being missing from the family for all these years. Ferry is now confident that something is definitely wrong, and as he insists on knowing more, it is revealed that his granddaughter has been following in the same footsteps as him. Jezebel and her boyfriend, Jer, had started a business making and selling ecstasy pills, but they had run into a major problem when they had taken a hefty order from a drug trafficker named Lex van Dun.

Lex had already made a down payment for the batch of drugs he was supposed to receive from them, with which Jezebel and Jer bought a laboratory setup and the raw materials to make the pills. However, before they could manufacture and deliver the order, the police came knocking on their doors and confiscated the equipment and the raw materials. When Jezebel helplessly informed Lex about the matter, the gangster did not want to hear any excuses and insisted that the order for 250,000 pills should be delivered to him without any more delay. This is why the two of them have now come to Ferry, asking for the money so that they can start over once again and deliver the order. Although Ferry Bouman initially refuses to be a part of such a messed-up situation, hearing about Lex’s physical assault on Jezebel gets him riled up. Finally, Ferry decides to come out of retirement and leave Spain to help Jezebel and Jer in a more direct manner.

What does Lex really want from the deal?

On his way back to his hometown from Spain, Ferry calls up an old acquaintance to learn more about the villainous Lex van Dun, and he is immediately told to be careful. Apparently, Lex is a man who enjoys torturing and killing people, and he even commits horrific crimes on a whim, without any particular rhyme or reason. Ferry meets Lex and tells him that he will be paid back the entire money that had been given to Jezebel as a down payment, and the deal that had been made earlier will be cancelled. This means that there would be no further requirement for the drugs ordered, and so Jezebel and Jer would be free, after all. However, Lex refuses to be a part of such a deal, and he insists that he needs the batch of drugs without any failure. In a psychopathic manner, Lex van Dun claims that someone else had placed the order and he needs to fulfill it to ensure that his reputation in the drug market is not harmed in any way.

It is also at this time that it is revealed that Jezebel had come in contact with Lex through another acquaintance of hers, Dennis, whom she is quite close with. After Jezebel’s father was killed, and she was made an orphan, it was Dennis who apparently took care of her and helped her out in times of need. However, Ferry is not at all happy to see Dennis, since he is the same man who had sold the protagonist out to the cops, resulting in his arrest and imprisonment. Currently, Dennis seems to be working for Lex, and although he keeps pretending to care for Jezebel and Jer, he is actually complicit in the real plan being hatched by Lex. As soon as Lex realizes that Ferry Bouman is back in town, he decides to get the veteran drug lord killed in order to avoid any competition on his turf.

Thus, Lex hires an assassin, Xia, to destroy Ferry’s camper and kill the man. The psychopathic drug dealer also clearly instructs her to kill Jezebel and her friends if they try to intervene, making it clear that he obviously does not care about the drugs or the money anymore. Lex knows that as long as Ferry is alive, he will have to let Jezebel walk free, despite her failing to deliver the drugs in time. While Lex can surely rebuild his reputation later, he does not want to get involved in such a situation because he does not want to bow down to Ferry and accept his return. Therefore, he hires Xia to kill the man and his family but does not realize that Ferry has already figured out his plan and has offered the assassin significantly more money to kill Lex instead.

Why does Jezebel stab Dennis?

At the crux of Ferry 2 is a plot of betrayal that has been kept secret for many years. It is revealed that Ferry himself had killed Sonja’s husband, meaning Jezebel’s father, when he had suspected the man to be a mole in his gang. There had been a falling out between the two, leading to Ferry ordering the murder of Sonja’s husband, but he genuinely believes that he did so only to protect the rest of his gang. However, Dennis had started to hate Ferry because of this murder of an innocent man, especially as he was the father to a young daughter who had already lost her mother. It was mainly as a result of this murder that Dennis decided to give the information about Ferry to the police, and so he still hates the protagonist to a great extent.

While Jezebel does not have any idea about what her grandmother’s brother had done to her own father, she eventually learns of it from Dennis at a very intense moment. By this time, she had heard Ferry talk about how Dennis was just a traitor a number of times, but she had still maintained good contacts with the man, solely because of what he had done for her after she became an orphan. However, Jezebel now grows extremely frustrated and stabs Dennis, calling him a traitor. It can be that Jezebel does not really believe what Dennis tells her about her father and thinks that he is trying to unfairly turn her against Ferry. Or, it could also be that Jezebel decides to act based on the present events, when Ferry tries everything to get her out of trouble, while Dennis risks her life only to get Ferry killed. Ultimately, Jezebel does honor her blood ties and chooses to be with Ferry, who shoots Dennis dead.

Did Ferry save Jezebel?

In Ferry 2’s ending, Jezebel, Jer, and Ferry have to have one final face-off against Lex and his men. Although the protagonist had hired Xia to kill the criminal, she had failed to act in time and was found out to be working for Ferry, which obviously led to her getting killed. While Ferry and Jezebel take down Lex’s men one after another, they ultimately have to fight against the villain with extreme courage. As Ferry has already been shot by this time and realizes that he is dying, he decides to make use of the opportunity to protect Jezebel at all costs. Thus, he creates a distraction for Jezebel and Jer to escape the place while walking up to Lex and seemingly giving up to him. But at the right moment, Ferry pulls out a second gun and shoots Lex dead, before he himself stumbles onto a nearby bench. In his final moments, Ferry imagines his beloved, Danielle, walking up to him and sitting beside him, which remains his biggest unfulfilled dream, as he dies on the bench all alone in reality.

Ferry 2’s mid-credits scene also presents an update about Jezebel, confirming that she has not run away from the life of drugs and crime. Instead, she delivers an order of ecstasy pills, for which she is paid quite handsomely, and the young woman seems to be really enjoying life. Perhaps it will be Jezebel who will head the Ferry franchise from here on, as she might rise to the same level of fame and notoriety as her granduncle.
