Discovering Penfolds’ Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz with Friends of BURO
1 day ago
For nearly two centuries, Penfolds has stood as a beacon of exceptional winemaking, seamlessly blending tradition, innovation, and craftsmanship to create some of the most celebrated wines in the world. Founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold in South Australia, the brand has built an enduring legacy rooted in consistency and quality. Among its remarkable collection, Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz stands out as a shining testament to its winemaking prowess, earning its place as a staple for both wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
Affectionately dubbed ‘Baby Grange’, Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is a unique blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that harmoniously combines structure and richness. First crafted in 1960 by the legendary winemaker Max Schubert, it marries the best characteristics of both varietals—the cabernet sauvignon lends elegance and backbone, while the shiraz delivers opulence and depth. Aged in the same barrels previously used for Penfolds’ flagship Grange, Bin 389 continues to deliver a distinctive complexity that sets it apart. Whether enjoyed as a bottle to mark special milestones or as a thoughtful gift, it remains an elegant choice perfect for celebrations or intimate evenings with those nearest and dearest.
On a recent afternoon, Penfolds invited a curated group of tastemakers and creatives to If Only, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most stylish dining destinations, for an exclusive vertical tasting of Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz. The afternoon unfolded as a masterclass in taste and refinement, with guests embarking on a sensory journey through three exceptional vintages of Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz: 2020, 2002, and 1994. Each glass revealed the wine’s evolution over time, showcasing its ability to age gracefully while maintaining its signature balance of fruit, tannins, and oak.
Hosted by Penfolds Brand Ambassador and Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, Joshua Yim, the intimate gathering brought together 20 distinguished guests, including prominent names from Malaysia’s fashion, design, and culinary circles. Among them were influencer and entrepreneur Bella Kuan, jewellery designer and founder of Gung Jewellery Yinn Ooi, multi-disciplinary artist Pamela Tan, food writer, recipe developer and recent winner at the BURO Impact Awards 2024, Loh Yi Jun, fashion designers Justin Yap and Aaron Yong, founder of WJ & Co, Wen Yeunh, and entrepreneurs Diane Chia and Bobby Low, to name a few.
To complement the tasting, If Only’s culinary team curated an exquisite menu designed to enhance the character of Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz. Lunch began with a refreshing cold angel hair pasta with hokkaido scallops, followed by sharing plates of gochujang chicken skewers, roasted Cherry Valley duck breast and a miso soy braised beef cheek, highlighting the absolute versatility of Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz.
More than just a lunch, the gathering served as a celebration of Penfolds’ enduring legacy and a reminder of the power of exceptional wine to bring people together. With its approachable sophistication, Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz remains a timeless choice for those seeking to mark life’s most meaningful moments. Whether enjoyed over a meal, shared as a gift, or savoured on a quiet evening at home, it is a wine that resonates with both tradition and modernity.
