6 longhouses in Kanowit hit by flood after continuous heavy rain

SIBU (Dec 21): Continuous heavy rain in Kanowit caused access routes to six longhouses and the main Pedai Road to be cut off after being submerged by water up to four feet deep.

Among the affected longhouses are Rh Anthony Langit, Rh Penghulu Lambat, Rh Tadong, Rh Tenggi, Rh Richard Sintan and Rh Connie, and the flood has made it difficult for residents to carry out their daily tasks as vehicles cannot pass through the main road to these longhouses.

Kanowit Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Chief Rashid Songli said monitoring patrols were conducted in the flood-affected areas.

“The main access to the longhouses and the main Pedai Road are submerged by water up to four feet deep, completely cutting off the access routes.

“We are monitoring this situation closely and ensuring the safety of the local residents,” he said today.

In addition, the flood also affected Jalan Nibong Tada, which was submerged by half a foot of water but is still passable by vehicles.

Meanwhile, at SK Ulu Bawan, the field, assembly hall, and sepak takraw court were submerged by one foot of water, but the situation remains under control.

However, SK Nanga Balingiau was not affected by the flood.

Rashid also informed three firefighters from Bomba Kanowit are using a four-wheel-drive vehicle to monitor the affected areas.

“Overall, the situation in the monitored locations is still under control. Residents are advised to be cautious, avoid staying in flood-prone areas, and immediately report any emergencies,” he added.

Residents in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding are also advised to take precautions and continuously monitor weather updates from the authorities.

“We will continue to monitor the flood situation in Kanowit, with Bomba ready to take swift action if the situation worsens.”
