Elon Musk has entered a heated debate over the United States’ H-1B visa programme, which permits companies to employ highly skilled foreign workers.

The billionaire, who previously held an H-1B visa himself, vowed to go “to war” to defend the programme, highlighting its significance in building companies like Tesla and SpaceX.

In a social media post, Musk stated, “The reason I’m in America, along with so many critical people who built these companies, is because of H-1B.”

He later acknowledged that the programme is “broken” and proposed reforms, such as increasing the minimum salary for visa holders and adding an annual fee, to address concerns about its misuse.

This stance has caused a rift within President-elect Donald Trump’s support base, dividing traditional anti-immigration hardliners and Silicon Valley leaders. Critics argue that the programme allows companies to hire cheaper foreign labour at the expense of American workers.

In contrast, Musk and his ally Vivek Ramaswamy contend that the U.S. lacks sufficient homegrown talent to maintain its technological edge.

Trump has expressed support for the H-1B programme, stating, “I’ve always liked the H-1B visas; I have always been in favour of the visas, that’s why we have them.” This position has led to criticism from some of his supporters, who fear he may be swayed by influential tech figures like Musk.

What Is the H-1B Visa?

The H-1B visa allows U.S. companies to employ highly skilled foreign workers in specialised fields such as technology, engineering, and medicine. Visa holders can work in the U.S. for up to six years. Musk, who utilised an H-1B visa to enter the U.S., underscores its role in America’s technological leadership.

For skilled Malaysian professionals, the H-1B visa offers a pathway to employment with leading tech companies in the U.S.. Malaysia’s expanding tech talent pool, particularly in areas like software engineering and artificial intelligence, could find opportunities through this programme.

However, potential reforms to the H-1B system, such as increased salary requirements and additional fees, could impact the accessibility and attractiveness of these opportunities for Malaysians.
