Malaysian Man Jailed For 19 Months In Singapore For Secretly Filming Landlady And Her Daughter Over Seven Years
By Dhiviya
A 40-year-old Malaysian man has been sentenced to 19 months in jail by a Singapore court after pleading guilty to secretly recording his landlady and her young daughter in private moments over the course of seven years. The man admitted to two counts of voyeurism and one count of insulting the modesty of the girl, reported CNA on December 30, 2024.
The man's actions came to light on April 8, 2024, when he was caught red-handed by the landlady. While showering at 10 a.m., the landlady noticed the man squatting outside the toilet with his phone, filming her through a gap beneath the door. Startled, she screamed, prompting the man to flee to his room.
The landlady immediately informed her husband, who contacted the police at 11:22 a.m. Officers arrived within minutes, arresting the man and confiscating multiple electronic devices, including four phones and nine storage devices.
Subsequent investigations uncovered a trove of incriminating evidence. Forensic analysis revealed 13 videos of the landlady, nine videos of her daughter, and 74 screenshots. Some of the most disturbing content dated back to 2018, when the landlady's daughter was just three years old.
The man filmed the young girl by exploiting opportunities when her mother left the master bedroom door open while changing her clothes. In some instances, he edited the videos to zoom in on the child's private parts, reorienting the footage to enhance his view.
The man admitted to his prolonged misconduct, stating that the recordings were for his own gratification. However, he claimed that he did not distribute the content. The court was told that his actions became more frequent as he grew emboldened by his ability to avoid detection.
The landlady, in her victim impact statement, shared her ongoing distress over the betrayal and violation of trust. She revealed that her daughter remains unaware of the incidents, as she and her husband are not ready to disclose the traumatic events to their young child.
To improve security, the family has since installed a CCTV system in their living room and replaced their homes locks with digital ones.
The Malaysian man, a work permit holder who had been employed as an aerospace machine operator in Singapore, had rented the property from the landlady for a decade. Despite his long-term stay, he breached the family's trust in an unforgivable manner.
In sentencing, the court emphasized the gravity of his offenses and their long-lasting impact on the victims. The mans 19-month jail term reflects the severity of his actions and serves as a stern warning against such violations of privacy.
