Chinese New Year 2025: 7 Unique yee sang platters to toss

Forgo tradition and say hello to innovation with these unique yee sang platters for your Chinese New Year 2025 reunions.

Fireworks, reunion dinners, red packets, new outfits, and biscuits…what’s missing? Yee sang. A multi-coloured, multi-textured platter of seasonal goddess, yee sang is without a doubt a main character in Chinese New Year celebrations here in Malaysia. Having a platter to kick off a reunion is customary. Just as important as the dish itself, yelling special proverbs that welcome good fortune while dressing the platter and tossing the yee sang is also a must-do at these meals. You often see platters topped with salmon,  crispy wanton skins, julienned vegetables such as carrots, five-spice powder, and so much more. However, to make your Chinese New Year 2025 reunions truly special, these unique yee sang platters are sure to do the trick with their non-traditional toppings or special sauces.

FIFTY TALES

If you’ve got a reservation at Fifty Tales for your reunion dinner this Chinese New Year, you’re already on the right track. The team recently introduced their seasonal Cincai Dinner menu Make sure you complete your meal with an order of its house special yee sang, which ditches the traditional sticky plum sauce for a tangy salted guava and calamansi sauce that ties the entire plate together. The addition of abalones ups the luxe factor, while adding a nice, bouncy bite to each spoonful (or chopstick grab). For crunch, there are heaps of fried wanton skins and deep-fried yam strips for everyone to enjoy.

TABLE AND APRON

Table and Apron’s Prosperity Yee Sang embraces the crunch and tang of Malaysia’s culinary tapestry. Atop beds of sengkuang, coconut flakes, ulam raja, and white radish is a generous serving of smoked salmon. A heaping of murukku, some pickles, and pomegranate seeds add some crunch, while pomelo and bunga kantan bring some delightfully Malaysian fragrance. Tying the dish together is a silky asam jawa sauce.

INSIDE SCOOP

More of a sweets person? No problem. Presenting: one of the most unique yee sang platters to grace the CNY 2025 season. Inside Scoop is embracing the ice cream way of life with its special yee sang platter. Instead of tossing vegetables, fruits, and fish, you’ll be mixing ice cream with an array of classic toppings. On the platter, you’ll find five scoops of ice cream, peanut chunks, red velvet cake, almond flakes, chocolate pearls, and more.

ALIYAA

Put a Sri Lankan twist on your Chinese New Year 2025 reunions with its sambol and noodle yee sang. While it may not include the traditional toppings that you’re used to seeing, it sure will bring the flavour (and spice) that any true Malaysian will love. The platter is a fiery mix of seven types of sambol, papadam, deep-fried seacrab, and noodles. All we can say is: make sure to toss well so you’ll get a taste of every single sambol in each mouthful!

VCR

Pop over to VCR’s Sunway Pyramid branch for a taste of its refreshing Lou Sang Salad with hoisin sauce. Comprising cherry tomatoes, kyuri, smoked duck slices, mandarin oranges, and a base of greens, this yee sang is made to be tossed with a smaller table or by yourself if you’re dining solo. Walk-ins are welcome!

CHIPTA 11A

Beloved for its Malaysian take on sushi and Japanese cuisine, Chipta 11A is also doing its part this Chinese New Year with its very own yee sang. Featuring exquisite cuts of sashimi and vegetables from local farmers, its platter blends cultures while putting flavour on the fore front. The base yee sang uses Tai (sea bream) as its centrepiece, but additional options—including amaebi (red shrimp) and awabi (abalone) are available for a more lush platter.

MARIA’S STEAKCAFÉ

Forgo the slices of salmon or jellyfish this year and go big with some steak on your yee sang. Maria’s Steakcafé is doing what it does best and adding some slow-cooked pulled beef on top of the regular fix-ins. Those who prefer to go more classic can opt for the smoked salmon platter instead! To fit any celebrations, this yee sang is available in two size options: medium and large.
