Sarawak refines Kapit Master Plan with global insights from Norway

KUCHING (Feb 20): Sarawak is taking a significant step towards refining the Kapit Master Plan by incorporating global best practices as one of the key efforts during an official visit to Norway, which began on Wednesday.

Led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the delegation engaged in a briefing with the City Government of Oslo to explore sustainable urban planning strategies.

According to a press release by the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda), the delegation explored infrastructure planning and urban development strategies that could serve as key benchmarks for Kapit’s growth.

“Oslo was chosen due to its innovative approaches to urban planning, zoning, and infrastructure projects, which could provide valuable benchmarks for Kapit’s development,” said Awang Tengah, who is Natural Resources and Urban Development Minister II during the briefing.

During the session, political adviser to the vice mayor for urban development Ingeborg Tennes outlined Oslo’s vision for a resilient, connected, and green city.

Meanwhile, planning adviser Peter Austin shared insights on integrating public transport, digital planning tools, and climate-adaptive infrastructure to support sustainable urban growth.

Recoda chief executive officer Datuk Ismawi Ismuni presented the Kapit Master Plan, emphasising its commitment to environmental sustainability, economic vibrancy, cultural heritage and identity.

“By aligning these goals with global best practices, the plan aims to drive development while safeguarding Kapit’s environment and identity.

“This knowledge exchange strengthens Sarawak’s vision for sustainable rural growth,” said the press release.
