'The Witch' K-Drama Episodes 1-2 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Mi-Jeong A Witch?

The new K-drama starring Got7’s Jinyoung, The Witch, has finally made its way to our screens. The slow and mysterious drama tells the story of a girl who brings bad luck to all the boys in the small town she lives in. The first two episodes give us context to why the show is called “The Witch,” and why a grown-up Dong-Jin (Jinyoung) is so eager to figure out if Mi-Jeong is a witch or not. Based on Kang Pool’s Webtoon of the same name, the 2025 K-drama is likely set in the same universe as Moving and Light Shop. The vibe is certainly the same. The first two episodes go from the present to the past, where Dong-Jin is in High School and notices a girl named Mi-Jeong. The two of them never interact, but it becomes clear that Dong-Jin is fascinated by this girl, as are most of the boys in school. However, strange occurrences take over the school and Mi-Jeong gets blamed for all of them. With that said let’s jump straight into episodes 1 and 2.

Spoiler Alert

What Does Dong-Jin Do Now?

It’s ironic, but as an adult, Dong-Jin is the kind of person that Mi-Jeong used to be seen as when they were young – alone. Of course, the context is different, and the word I really should use here is lonely. Episode 1 begins in the present day, where we see Dong-Jin working as a “data miner.” He finishes up a fancy presentation solely based on numbers at a huge casino. The owner of the casino is impressed and straight up offers to invest in his company. I definitely feel like this man pop up again later on in the show. When Dong-Jin is leaving, his fancy car seems to have been vandalized, so he goes to the police, where he helps the detective see that the two people who apparently fought each other are actually brothers. It seems Dong-Jin leads a very quiet life and is friends with a detective who is very busy but keen on checking on him. After having a meal by himself, Dong-Jin heads home on the subway. There, a drunk man is harassing a woman to like him back. Dong-Jin realizes the name sounds familiar, and upon taking a closer look, he notices she’s the same Mi-Jeong he knew back in school. Dong-Jin then follows Mi-Jeong and finds her feeding some cats. It seems she’s still a loner like back in school, but she seems to be doing okay.

When Dong-Jin returns home, he learns that the man who was confessing to Mi-Jeong in the subway collapsed soon after she left. There’s also video evidence. This leads Dong-Jin to question the whole thing once again.

Why Is Mi-Jeong Known As The Witch?

In a flashback, we learn that Dong-Jin and Mi-Jeong went to the same school in a small town. In episode 1 we see the way things pan out from Dong-Jin’s point of view. In episode 2, we see it from Mi-Jeong’s point of view. Since childhood, when a boy shows interest in Mi-Jeong they end up in an accident, hurt or just dead. In high school, a bunch of boys associated with Mi-Jeong ended up dying; one got electrocuted by lightning, the other by the electric line, another got stung by a hornet in the winter. It just never made any sense, but people started to take notice. So much so that she got dubbed “The Witch.” It’s funny because despite being given that name and trying to stay away from people at the school, boys seem to go after her anyway. I suppose these are the skeptics, but they’re the ones who end up hurt.

In order to steer clear of trouble, Mi-Jeong eats by herself, doesn’t talk to anybody and simply focuses on her school work. This is when Dong-Jin takes notice of her, but somehow he never musters up the courage to talk to her. Rather than completely putting the whole idea that she’s a witch aside, Dong-Jin wants to figure out why such accidents are occuring.

What Happens To Mi-Jeong’s Dad?

Mi-Jeong’s mother died during childbirth, so she isn’t even happy celebrating her birthday. However, instead of hating her, her dad loves her to death and always wants to see her happy. He encourages her at every step, but when he notices she doesn’t have friends, he tries to get her to speak. Finally, when there were too many deaths to handle, Mi-Jeong quietly decides to drop out of school. Her dad learns the truth and even finds that his own neighbors, not just the kids, are spreading rumors about his innocent daughter. He decides the best thing they can do is leave the town and move to the big city of Seoul. He has a brief encounter with Dong-Jin, who secretly helped Mi-Jeong all along. When Mi-Jeong’s dad shows up at school, he notices Dong-Jin chipping at a seat. Dong-Jin tells Mi-Jeong’s dad that he didn’t like that the kids were writing whatever they liked about Mi-Jeong on the seat, so he was trying to get rid of the graffiti. Finally, during graduation, Dong-Jin wants to give Mi-Jeong the yearbook and a bouquet, but he notices one of her old friends doing it instead, so there’s another opportunity to interact with her lost.

At the end of The Witch episode 2, Mi-Jeong gets bitten by a snake, and to save her life, her dad sucks out the poison himself. Before he passes, Mi-Jeong’s dad asks her to promise that she won’t let anyone find out how he died, because they would blame her for it too. In the end, Mi-Jeong decides to leave the small town by herself and go to Seoul like her dad wanted her to. In the preview of the next episode we see that Dong-Jin’s mum may have been responsible for sending the poor girl away, believing in the rumors that she brings bad luck. At the same time, it looks like Dong-Jin became a data miner solely to understand Mi-Jeong’s “case,” and now that he’s found her, he’s likely going to try really hard to follow her around and figure out this mystery.
