Why many young drivers in Malaysia still prefer petrol cars over EVs
1 day ago
Young people today are constantly keeping up with the latest trends, whether in fashion, technology or lifestyle choices.
They are early adopters of new innovations, always seeking what is fresh, efficient and aligned with the future.
The automotive industry is no exception, with electric vehicles (EVs) becoming an increasingly popular topic as governments and manufacturers push towards a greener and more sustainable future.
With EVs marketed as the next big leap in transportation, offering cutting-edge technology, environmental benefits and a futuristic driving experience, one might assume that Gen Z would naturally embrace them.
However, when it comes to choosing their own vehicles, many young drivers remain drawn to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.
Daniel Lin Li Shan (Danny), a 25-year-old customer service executive, said he would prefer a tried-and-tested ICE vehicle as his first car.
Growing up in Medan, Indonesia, Danny has always been more of a traditionalist, and his choice reflects this.
For now, he gets by using his parents’ car, a first-generation Toyota Avanza. Danny believes maintaining an ICE vehicle is far cheaper than a hybrid or EV.
Although he now resides in Malaysia for work, he said owning an EV back home in Medan would not make sense.
Not only are the roads there in poor condition, but charging infrastructure is also severely lacking.
Danny also highlighted the recent increase in electricity tariffs in Malaysia, arguing that charging an EV will soon become more expensive than refuelling an ICE vehicle.
Despite Gen Z in the West switching to EVs faster than manufacturers can keep up with, the trend does not seem to be taking off in the East.
Jacqueline, a 26-year-old retail store attendant, would also prefer an ICE vehicle as her first car, as she does not know much about cars and feels more comfortable choosing a traditional petrol-powered option.
She said the high cost of an EV or hybrid is the main reason for her decision, as value for money is her top priority.
For her, a car is simply a means of getting from point A to point B as affordably and reliably as possible.
Haziq Hafizuddin Mohd Mazlan, a 24-year-old barista and car enthusiast, shared a similar opinion. He, too, would prefer a traditional ICE vehicle over an EV or hybrid for his next car.
Haziq is the proud owner of a first-generation Perodua Myvi, heavily modified to match his aesthetic.
The car was originally purchased by his older brother and has since been fully paid off, meaning Haziq does not have to worry about monthly payments.
Haziq’s love for ICE vehicles goes beyond practicality—he genuinely enjoys the experience.
Additionally, he pointed out that ICE vehicles are generally cheaper and less of a hassle to maintain.
Arvind Krishna Kumar, a 27-year-old digital video editor and videographer, also prefers ICE vehicles.
He said ICE vehicles remain the best choice because they are cheaper to maintain, provide better range and offer peace of mind when refuelling compared to the uncertainty of charging an EV.
Another major concern for Arvind is how EVs lose range faster when driven at higher speeds.
Additionally, he sees EV battery replacements as a significant financial burden.
"After around five years, battery performance declines, leading to costly replacements," said Arvind.
In short, ICE vehicles remain unbeaten in terms of simplicity, affordability, and accessibility.
While many Gen Z drivers in the West are embracing EVs, their counterparts in Malaysia appear to prioritise practicality, accessibility and cost-effectiveness when deciding on their next car.
