Hustle culture: Is overworking our badge of honour?
THE culture of overworking in Malaysia is fueled by traditional values that link success to hard work and sacrifice, along with societal pressures to achieve financial stability in a competitive economy.
In Malaysia, the notion that hard work guarantees success has long been ingrained, driving a culture of relentless overworking.
Coupled with societal pressure to excel, many find themselves caught in a cycle where long hours are seen as a badge of honor, often at the cost of well-being.
Psychiatrist and Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) President Professor Datuk Dr Andrew Mohanraj highlighted that Malaysia’s struggles with hustling culture and work-life balance stem from a combination of cultural, societal and economic factors.
He explained that traditional values linking success to hard work and sacrifice, coupled with societal expectations to achieve financial stability in a competitive economy, have fostered a widespread culture of overwork.
“The hustling culture, characterised by relentless overworking, glorification of busyness and prioritising career over personal life, exacts a significant toll on individuals. While it may seem like a pathway to success, it often comes at a steep personal cost.
“Prolonged stress and overwork can lead to burnout, manifesting as physical and emotional exhaustion, detachment and diminished productivity.
“Over time, this relentless pressure erodes enthusiasm and creativity, which are essential to personal and professional growth,” he said in an interview with Sinar Daily.
Andrew pointed out that the relentless pressure to perform and achieve often leads to chronic anxiety, feelings of inadequacy and even depression, especially when individuals find it challenging to meet personal or societal expectations.
He stressed that overworking can impair cognitive functions like focus, decision-making and problem-solving, ultimately increasing the risk of errors and diminishing overall performance.
“The excessive focus on work often leaves little time for family, friendships and leisure, resulting in isolation and strained relationships.
“Plus, sacrificing sleep and self-care to maintain the hustling lifestyle exacerbates fatigue and weakens the immune system, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues and other chronic health problems.
“This imbalance can lead individuals to lose touch with their personal identity and sense of purpose beyond professional achievements, highlighting the importance of cultivating a balanced life that prioritises well-being alongside career aspirations,” he said.
