Fahmi: Parliament to debate, approve Bills on Parliamentary Service and Constitutional Amendments

THE Malaysian Cabinet has decided to table and debate the Parliamentary Service Bill 2025 and the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025 during the current parliamentary session, announced Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

As the official spokesperson for the MADANI government, Fahmi revealed that the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Law and Institutional Reform, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, will present the first reading of both bills in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, February 24.

Fahmi also noted that the Cabinet has proposed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will deliver the second reading of the bills, scheduled for March 4, 2025.

“This step demonstrates the MADANI government’s commitment to pursuing reforms and strengthening democratic institutions in Malaysia,” Fahmi said in a statement today.

The Parliamentary Service Bill 2025 is part of the government's efforts to reform and enhance the country’s democratic institutions, with a particular focus on the Parliament.

The bill aims to establish a Parliamentary Council, which will be co-chaired by the Speaker of the Dewan Negara (Senate) and the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives).

Meanwhile, the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025 is designed to enable the Speakers of both houses of Parliament to be members of the newly proposed Parliamentary Council, marking another significant step towards institutional reform. – February 22, 2025
