'Daredevil: Born Again' Episode 7 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Muse Dead Or Alive?

For some reason, Marvel and Disney+ decided to release 2 episodes of Daredevil: Born Again last week. Usually, this is done where the story that’s told over the course of these 2 episodes has to be viewed together instead of being set apart by one week. Hardcore fans will probably disagree with me, but, in my opinion, that wasn’t the case here, and episodes 5 and 6 didn’t need to be watched one after another. So, I didn’t quite understand the thought process behind this sudden change in the schedule. Anyway, in the 5th episode, Matt Murdock foiled a bank robbery that had been orchestrated by Luca because he had been ordered by Fisk to give Viktor a huge sum of money. And in the 6th episode, Angela Del Toro was kidnapped by Muse, and Murdock finally put on his iconic costume to partake in some superheroism to save Hector Ayala’s niece. In addition to that, it was revealed that, during his personal time, Wilson Fisk was beating up Adam every night in his torture dungeon; meanwhile, as the mayor of NYC, he had set up a task force to kill vigilantes. The 7th episode of Daredevil: Born Again is primarily about killing Muse. So, let’s talk about it.

Spoiler Alert

Fisk Isn’t Happy About Daredevil’s Return

Daredevil: Born Again episode 7 opens with Fisk learning from Buck Cashman and Daniel Blake that Angela was saved from Muse by the titular vigilante, which causes Fisk to become livid. Angela recovers consciousness at the hospital and remembers that the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is the one who rescued her from Muse’s clutches. Later on, she tells Matt about the sketches that the supervillain had made with blood and how they could be a clue to Muse’s targets. Matt isn’t all that happy about putting on the costume again, but that doesn’t stop him from doing the devil’s tango with Heather Glenn in the shower. That said, soon after that the couple gets into an argument about Matt bottling his trauma and whatnot, and it’s so poorly written! The dialogue is just so abysmal that if it weren’t for this highly talented cast, this whole show would’ve been unwatchable.

This is apparently a Disney show that’s not meant for kids, but the writers just can’t stop spoon-feeding the audience for some reason. Anyway, Matt goes to work and is reprimanded by Cherry for putting on the suit again. The focus then shifts back to Fisk, who is still moping about the fact that Daredevil is back, and then he proceeds to give a brief recap of the events of his three-season run on Netflix. Because nobody expects Disney+ viewers to watch 3 seasons of Daredevil before watching this, I guess. The point of this whole scene between Fisk and Cashman is that he’s going to use the task force to go after Matt; as if that wasn’t clear already in the last episode. While Fisk is doing all this, Vanessa goes and meets with Luca, and she tells him to comply. But Luca tells Vanessa that since the Five Families were doing good business when she was in charge, they should reestablish that status quo by removing Wilson from the equation and putting Vanessa back in the throne.

Heather Kills Muse

Bastian Cooper, who is actually Muse, shows up for a therapy session with Heather. Detective Angie Kim goes to Wilson to inform him that, based on the evidence she collected from the place Angela was rescued, Bastian is probably Muse. While Angie and Wilson have a disagreement over how they should deal with this whole case, and it ends with Wilson dismissing Angie, Muse takes Heather hostage in order to thank her for unlocking his true potential. Matt revisits the aforementioned scene of crime and sifts through Muse’s sketches. He is shocked to learn that Heather is his next target. Before he can process this information, Officer Powell walks in on him, and Matt has no option but to knock him out.

When Powell regains consciousness, he informs Wilson about how Heather is about to be Muse’s next victim. Since Wilson is Heather’s client, he is supposedly concerned for her. Hence, he activates his anti-vigilante task force to go after Muse before she causes Heather irreparable harm. However, predictably enough, Daredevil gets to Heather’s office and gets into a fight with Muse. Matt manages to get Bastian’s gun out of his hands, but before he can incapacitate the supervillain and get the police to look into all the crimes he has committed, Heather picks up the gun and shoots Bastian until he is dead. It’s such a stupidly crafted scene because, if you go through it frame by frame, you’ll see that Heather is nowhere to be seen in one moment, and then in the next, she magically appears with that gun. I mean, the whole fight sequence is horrendously edited, but that moment with Heather is straight-up stupid. I don’t know what the showrunners were thinking. I guess they just wanted to shock the audience. Well, if that’s the emotion that you are feeling after that scene, I suppose it’s a win.

Fisk Takes Credit for Muse’s Death

At the end of Daredevil: Born Again episode 7, Fisk’s task force shows up at Heather’s office to confirm the fact that Muse is dead, and they take Heather to the hospital. Later on, when Fisk arrives to analyze the scene, one of the officers, Cole, informs the mayor that the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen was up there too. But Fisk says that that’s not the narrative they are going to present to the public. They are going to say that it’s the task force that killed Muse. In doing so, he not only undermines Matt’s act of heroism but also erases Heather’s rash decision from the records. The scene then shifts to Fisk’s office, where Blake is sitting in the mayor’s chair and reprimanding BB Urich for almost getting him fired by leaking a story that he shared with her in confidence. So, Blake wants BB to rectify her mistake by peddling the narrative to the public that Daredevil had nothing to do with Muse; the members of Fisk’s task force are the real heroes. BB doesn’t want to do Blake’s bidding, but when the latter threatens her, she considers falling in line to save her own life.

At the hospital, Matt and Heather learn that Fisk and his task force are taking all the credit for ending Muse, and they can do nothing about it even though they know what the truth is. Now, this would’ve been the perfect moment to end the episode. Instead of doing so, the writers choose to conclude things with a scene where Vanessa sends Luca into a trap. Luca thinks Vanessa has given him the chance to kill Wilson, but soon after he arrives there, Cashman kills Luca. Yes, I understand that this is the payoff for the setup that was done earlier in the episode. However, if the whole episode is about Muse, what’s the point of shoving Vanessa and Luca into all this? It not only takes up the time that could’ve been used to explore Muse before killing him so haphazardly, but it also makes the whole subplot about the Five Families seem pointless. Didn’t Fisk say that he’d let those guys cannibalize each other instead of directly meddling in their affairs? If he is personally getting them killed, why didn’t he just do that in the first episode where he appeared in front of the Five Families after a long time? That would’ve been more impactful than this. Whatever, there are 2 more episodes of the show left, and then we’ll be done with this nonsense.
