'Happy Face' Episode 4 Recap: Did Keith Hand Over The Murder Weapon?

In Happy Face episode 3, we saw that Ivy and Melissa started doubting their own findings after they realized that Keith might be misleading them. They got to know that, back in the day, Keith had taken the blame for a murder committed by someone else for money. Ivy knew that if her claims proved to be wrong, she would lose her credibility and moreover disappoint Dr. Gregg. At the end of episode 3, Ivy and Melissa went to meet the latter’s brother, Shane, in the hope that he could give them some evidence to prove that Keith had actually murdered Heather. So, let’s find out what happened in Happy Face episode 4 and if Ivy and Melissa were able to make a breakthrough.

Spoiler Alert

Why was Shane angry at Melissa?

Ivy and Melissa were patiently waiting outside Shane’s house when a woman suddenly opened the main door and apologized for not hearing the doorbell. That woman was Gillian, Keith’s girlfriend. For a moment, Ivy and Melissa didn’t know how to digest that information, and they stood there looking at Gillian’s face, not being able to understand if they’d heard right what she said. But as shocking as it might have been, Gillian was in a committed relationship with Keith. Gillian had many pen pals from the prison, as she empathized with their situation, and she believed that they also deserved all the kindness in the world. The way Gillian normalized everything and the way she talked about Keith, like he was some regular guy, forced Ivy to address the elephant in the room and ask her what she thought about the murders he had committed. Gillian told Melissa and Ivy that she knew everything about Keith’s past, and moreover, she was the first one who came to know about Keith’s ninth victim, Heather, too. Melissa couldn’t process what she was hearing, and she couldn’t help but mock Gillian at times. Shane dropped by a bit later, and he lost his temper when he saw Ivy interviewing Gillian. He told Melissa that he was not comfortable appearing on camera and that they needed to pack their things and leave immediately. At that moment Melissa did feel bad, but she came back the next day to apologize to her brother and spend some time with him. It had been long since Melissa had spent some time with Shane, and she was keen to know how his life had changed over the years. Maybe, deep down, Melissa believed that if she spent some time with Shane, then probably he would open up and tell her what he saw in Texas.

Was Melissa able to get any information from Shane?

Melissa’s interview had repercussions, something that she had foreseen while making the decision to go on air with Dr. Gregg. Melissa’s kids were being called all sorts of names, and some parents didn’t want their kids to spend time with them. Melissa decided to accompany Shane to an acquaintance’s house, where he was supposed to deliver a table. That table had first belonged to Keith’s father, and ever since then, it had been in the family. Everything was going fine until the family, who were supposed to take the table, saw Melissa and decided to change their minds. Even the scrap dealer refused to buy it, and that’s when Shane told Melissa that he knew that the moment their family secrets went public, the people would treat them like that. Now it was not like people didn’t know that Shane was Keith’s son, but the gory details that Melissa had provided during the interview refreshed the memories of the people and made them develop a sense of repulsion against the family. Shane told Melissa that she was fortunate that she got to change her name after marriage, indirectly telling her of the kind of discrimination he suffered after their father’s confession.

Shane, at the end of Happy Face episode 4, broke down in front of Melissa, and he told her that he was with Keith in Texas when he killed 2 women there. He said that he didn’t have any clue that he had killed a third woman too. Shane felt guilty for what had happened, and after Melissa revealed everything, he felt even worse. He told Melissa that just before Keith went on a killing spree, he had decided to take his own life. Shane saw that his father had consumed certain pills, so he immediately took him to the hospital. Keith survived, and it left Shane wondering if he did the right thing by saving Keith’s life. Melissa told her brother that he was not at fault and that he shouldn’t blame himself for what had happened. Shane was a mess, and though he was on speaking terms with his father and he visited him in the prison on a regular basis, the wrongdoings of his father had affected him in ways that even he didn’t know about. Though Melissa got a fair bit of information, she still didn’t know for sure if her father had killed Heather or if he was just claiming it to grab everybody’s attention or for any other reason.

Why did Keith hand over the murder weapon to Melissa?

Shane and Melissa already were not having a great day when the latter decided to go to Brendon and find out why he told the media about her abortion. Brendon told Melissa that he had had nothing to do with the news, and he too didn’t have a clue who could have done it. Brendon had done horrendous things in the past, but Melissa knew that this time he was speaking the truth. She didn’t say anything as she knew now who had leaked the news. Apart from Brendon, only one person knew about Melissa’s abortion, and that was her father, Keith Jesperson. Now though Keith had murdered and raped women, surprisingly he too had a conservative moral compass, and there were certain things that he didn’t approve of at all. He was quite orthodox in that manner, and he believed that it was a sin to have an abortion. Back in the day he’d criticized Melissa and called her a murderer, and she couldn’t believe that a man who had killed multiple women, who was a sociopath, who was serving time in prison, was giving her a moral lecture.

In Happy Face episode 4, Melissa went to see her father, and she told him that she knew that he was the one who had leaked the news. Keith told her that he needed to show her who was in charge, as at times she’d insulted him, when he was the reason she was getting all the attention from the entire country. Though Keith judged Melissa for what she had done in the past, he had a weakness; he couldn’t let Melissa not talk to him. He had a very obsessive nature when it came to Melissa, and he was overly possessive of her. When Keith compared Melissa to himself, she told him that she hadn’t tortured or murdered women. Melissa said that she had decided to have an abortion because she was raped by Brendon. Keith suddenly felt extremely apologetic for not being there to save his little one. Also, earlier in the episode, we saw that when Ivy went to talk to Keith, he didn’t entertain her, and the only thing on his mind was why Melissa hadn’t come to meet him. One thing that became clear about Keith’s behavior was that he could go to any extent just to make sure that Melissa and his grandkids were on talking terms with him. Melissa told him that she would not come to meet him ever again, and that’s when Keith stopped her and told her where he had hidden the murder weapon with which he had killed Heather. Melissa and Shane now have the murder weapons, and I believe that in the subsequent episodes, Ivy and Melissa will be able to make some headway in their investigation and find out if Keith was actually telling the truth or not.
