'Devil May Cry' Season 2 Theories: Will Dante Kill Vergil? What Is Baines' Plan?
The first season of Devil May Cry ended on a massive cliffhanger, suggesting that Dante’s story will be continued in the next season. [Spoiler Alert] The closing shot of Netflix’s animated series revealed that Dante’s twin brother, Vergil, isn’t dead. Though it wasn’t as shocking as the makers intended it to be because, throughout season 1, White Rabbit hinted numerous times that Dante’s brother is alive. The season itself began with a shapeshifter taking the form of Vergil; however, he later explained that he couldn’t take an entity’s appearance unless that person is alive. So that’s your clue. It seemed like it was Vergil who had told the Rabbit about his father’s sword, the Force Edge, and the two pieces of the magic amulet that could help him bring down the barrier between the two worlds, i.e., the human world and the demon world. In the show’s final episodes, Vergil, in his demonic form, even gave a vial of his blood to Rabbit, which was needed to complete the spell. So the question here is: was it Vergil and his demon master, Mundus, who had been pulling Rabbit’s strings, and the humans just fell straight into their trap? I guess so. This means Vergil’s return isn’t good news for any of us, not even Dante. And the ending of season 1 sets the stage for an ultimate face-off between the twin brothers. So, allow me to theorize what we can expect from Devil May Cry season 2.
Dante Will Defeat VergilIn season 1’s ending, US Vice President Baines, who got hold of Rabbit’s portal device, opened a gateway to hell and launched a full-fledged attack on the demon world. Baines, since the very beginning of the show, had been looking for reasons to turn humanity against their demon counterparts, unaware of the fact that not all the creatures of hell are monsters. But as Rabbit mentioned, anything that looks different is a threat to the United States, and it seems like, after the Middle East, they’d found a new playground to test their arsenal out on. The American army, under a new general, launched missiles towards the Makai dwellers, and locked them up in an Uroboros Detention Facility, somewhere in the Netherworld. In the end, Vergil arrived at the facility and rescued his fellow demons, asking for their allegiance against their common enemy. Now I don’t know if it was Vergil’s or Mundus’ plan to unite the creatures of hell or if they just came up with this plan when Baines initiated Operation Inferno. Whatever the case might be, Mundus’ main objective was to conquer humanity and make slaves of them all, but before he could do so, his most fabled general, Sparda, rose in rebellion and used all his powers to create a barrier between the two realms so that the King of Hell couldn’t fulfil his evil schemes. It seems like after Sparda’s betrayal, Mundus sent demons to Earth to kill the Dark Knight alongside his human wife, Eva, and their two kids. We don’t know if, in Netflix’s Devil May Cry, Sparda is alive or not, but Vergil likely managed to escape or was abducted by the demons and taken to the other realm, where the King of Hell brainwashed him and turned Vergil into a monster like him. In the present timeline, Vergil holds the same position as his father and likely desires to be a great warrior like him. Maybe Vergil really believed that, by siding with Mundus, he was helping his demon brothers and saving them from the sapiens’ wrath.
I don’t think Vergil is pure evil like his master, he may only want what’s best for his kind. He may have wanted to merge the two realms so that the Makaians could have access to fresh air and their kids wouldn’t die any more from the toxins around them. But with human forces attacking hell, I think Vergil didn’t have any option but to aid Mundus in the war against the sapiens and save his homeland from their invasion. But even though Vergil has made his choice, Dante may find himself conflicted choosing a side. From the very beginning of the show, Baines wanted him to join DARKCOM and hunt down demons for him. However, the way Mary had tranquilized him and locked him up in a cryostasis chamber, I don’t think he will be willing to take any part in the war America has started. The news of Vergil’s return may convince Dante to step into hell to see his twin brother, but fighting against him is a different story. It will take a lot of convincing and some really good reasons for Dante to take up his sword against his own brother. We can expect a violent clash between the two brothers in season 2’s ending, but what eventually leads to such a battle will be interesting to look out for in the next season.
Baines Will Come Up With New WeaponsYou may have noticed that the sapiens’ army has been busy mining things in the Netherworld. I am sure they didn’t find oil there, but then what could it be? I believe Baines may have found some compound, or an ore in hell that can be used as a weapon. The show, from the very beginning, established the fact that ordinary human weapons were no match against the creatures of hell, which was why DARKCOM developed special bullets to eliminate the demons. However, even such arms cannot penetrate the protective scales on demons’ bodies, and therefore the sapien army has been looking for something more lethal. It is possible that Baines is already researching some new weapons and firearms in the Netherworld facility so he can take down Mundus’ army, especially his invincible knight, Vergil. It’s quite obvious though, that all his deadly weapons, and his most efficient soldier, Mary Ann Arkham, cannot put up a fight against Vergil, which will leave them with no other option but to release Dante from his captivity and convince him to protect the American forces who are being slaughtered in numbers in the demon world.
Baines Will DieThrough Baines’ characters, the show explores its running theme that it isn’t appearances that make a person evil, but their actions. And if you look at it in this way, then there’s not much of a difference between Baines and Mundus, who, through their respective military campaigns, have been taking innocent lives on the battlefield just because they wanted to enslave their enemy and take over their resources. Baines could have chosen to destroy Rabbit’s device, but instead of letting the matter go, he launched an attack on hell and killed innocent men and women so that the creatures of hell were no longer a threat to humanity. Baines wanted to build a kingdom of God in hell, and I feel it’s his religious fanaticism that will be the end of him. Sooner or later, he’s going to face the consequences of his actions, making him realize that he committed the worst mistake of his life by launching an attack on hell and toying with things he didn’t completely understand. His greed and hatred will eventually lead to his downfall. It’s possible that either Dante or Mary will kill him at the end of season 2 to put an end to his evil.
Mary Will Leave DARKCOMMary only joined DARKCOM because an encounter with a demon in the subway turned her whole life upside down. Her father, Arkham, who was a professor at university, tried to prove the existence of the demonic creatures, but due to lack of any substantial evidence, he was mocked at the institution soon after he got obsessed with proving to the world that demons do exist. The show doesn’t explore how, but it looked like Arkham had developed some sort of serum to turn himself into a demon. However, the moment he transformed, he lost control of himself and ended up killing Mary’s mother, Kalina Ann. A young Mary somehow managed to escape her father’s wrath and accidentally lit a fire in his study that caused his death. But even though the horrors had settled down for the time being, Mary couldn’t erase the memory of such a traumatic incident and blamed the demons for her parents’ death. She joined DARKCOM to slaughter every single demon in the world until she came across the Makaians. They were ordinary residents of the Netherworld who just wanted to survive and lead a normal life, but Mundus’ tyranny didn’t leave them much of an option but to cross to the human world for the survival of their kids. This is to say, Mary knows that not every demon is evil, and therefore she will rise up in rebellion against her own agency when she witnesses their brutality against these common folks. Sooner or later, Mary will join forces with Dante and help him bring down the evil on both sides of the war so they, together as a team, can promote peace and harmony between the two factions.
With that said, I think the second season of Netflix’s Devil May Cry will likely center around the personal conflicts of the key characters in the show. We can expect a clash between the two brothers and even the return of their fabled father; however, the entirety of season 2’s narrative is only going to prepare the characters for a major showdown in the third season where they will battle against the might of the Demon Emperor, Mundus, and defeat him so as to bring an end to his tyranny.
