Farewell to a Gentle Statesman: Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Dies at 85

Malaysia mourns the loss of its fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who passed away on Monday night. Known for his moderate leadership and commitment to civil liberties, his tenure marked a significant chapter in the nation’s history.

Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister and a figure synonymous with moderation and integrity, passed away on April 14, 2025, at the age of 85. His death was confirmed by his son-in-law, Khairy Jamaluddin, via an Instagram post, stating that Abdullah died peacefully at 7:10 PM at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur, where he had been admitted a day earlier due to breathing difficulties.

Affectionately known as “Pak Lah,” Abdullah was born on November 26, 1939, in Bayan Lepas, Penang. He earned a degree in Islamic Studies from the University of Malaya and embarked on a long career in public service, culminating in his appointment as Prime Minister in 2003, succeeding Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

His tenure was marked by a commitment to anti-corruption measures and the promotion of a moderate interpretation of Islam, focusing on economic and technological development. Abdullah’s approach to governance emphasized civil liberties and media freedom, earning him widespread support in the early years of his administration.

However, his administration faced challenges, including criticism over the reduction of fuel subsidies leading to price hikes, and perceptions of ineffective governance. These issues contributed to the Barisan Nasional coalition’s significant electoral losses in 2008, noted at the time as a monumental shift in Malaysian politics, leading to Abdullah’s resignation in 2009.

In 2022, it was publicly disclosed that Abdullah had been diagnosed with dementia, and his health had been in decline. Despite his illness, he remained a respected figure in Malaysian politics, known for his gentle demeanor and commitment to unity.

Upon his passing, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim led tributes, describing Abdullah as a leader who embodied “humanity in leadership” and praised his calming presence in the political landscape.

Cabinet ministers in Malaysia also expressed condolences, including Foreign Minister and UMNO Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin; Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang; and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, and Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook also offered their condolences.

Meanwhile, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the former Prime Minister had provided years of service to the nation, leading with wisdom, moderation, and integrity.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa praised Abdullah as a statesman who led the country with compassion, dignity, and humanity.

Abdullah is survived by his second wife, children, and grandchildren. His legacy as a leader who valued moderation, integrity, and civil liberties continues to influence Malaysian politics.
