However, one particular country isn’t too happy by the turn of events, with various parties trying to pour cold water on Xi’s trip by making distasteful remarks about certain Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia.
US TV host mocks President Xi Jinping’s M’sia trip in viral clipIn a close to 1-minute clip which has been circulating wildly on X (formerly known as Twitter), it featured conservative political commentator and TV host Bill O’Reilly sharing his thoughts on Xi’s visit to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
However, none of the remarks he made were positive ones. Instead, he took a few potshots at these countries by claiming they “have no money at all”.
O’Reilly then doubled down on this claim by declaring the US held all the resources in purchasing China goods, adding Xi was digging a financial grave for himself by visiting these countries.
“I don’t know why you’re going there because now maybe he (Xi) is trying to sneak in Chinese goods under the Vietnamese label but that’s gonna be easily exposed.
“We (the US) have the money. We buy the stuff. The Malays aren’t gonna buy your stuff they don’t have any money,” he said with a laugh.
Facts say otherwiseAccording to data collected by the Department of Statistics Malaysia’s (DOSM), it showed that Malaysia achieved a gross domestic product (GDP) of RM1.93 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2024.
As for its gross national income per capita (average income of an individual in a country), it rose by 3.6% to RM54,894.
When it comes to trading with China, Malaysia’s total trade rose by 4.7% year-on-year (YoY) to RM41.43 billion as of Jan 2025. The Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) also reported a 9.4% growth of imports from China in the same period to RM28.11 billion.
Online backlashO’Reilly’s comments have since stirred up anger among Malaysians, who slammed him for his ignorant and condescending tone.
Former journalist and editor Joe Lee, who first shared the clip, wrote hasn’t “detested Americans this much with the way they look down on us Southeast Asians.”
One called the TV host “pathetic”, adding that most Americans were unable to identify Southeast Asian countries on the map.
Another said it was ironic to see O’Reilly boast about the US’ financial might when it’s no secret that the country owes money to China.
