KUCHING, April 25: The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) marked a significant milestone by hosting its first-ever Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at the Grand Margherita Hotel, bringing together all its investee companies under one roof for the first time since its establishment on March 1, 1972.

Gracing the event was the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, alongside an array of distinguished guests including ministers, federal and Sarawak departmental heads, and key stakeholders from various sectors who gathered to celebrate the festive occasion in the spirit of Aidilfitri.

In his welcoming address, SEDC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain reflected on the corporation’s journey, highlighting its transformation from spearheading basic industries to expanding into housing, property development, and now, strategic ventures such as new energy technologies, foreign investments, tourism, and the digital and green economies.

“SEDC has never defined success solely by numbers or assets. Our true measure lies in the social impact we bring to the people of Sarawak—through skills training, job creation, entrepreneurship, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

“Our mission remains to deliver balanced, inclusive, and sustainable development in line with the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.

Abdul Aziz emphasised that the open house served as a platform to express deep appreciation to ministries, government departments, agencies, private sector partners, and community stakeholders whose ongoing trust and collaboration have helped position SEDC as a driving force in Sarawak’s economic transformation.

“This celebration is not just for our workforce, but for everyone who has contributed to SEDC’s success over the years. Our success is shared success—and this gathering strengthens our bonds of friendship while fostering unity,” he said.

He reaffirmed SEDC’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Sarawak government’s vision of “Sarawak Maju Makmur,” ensuring continued prosperity and wellbeing for the people.

The festivities began with a captivating cultural performance by dancers from Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), featuring the iconic “Welcoming Dance” and the vibrant “Tarian Nopeng”—a creative piece inspired by Gendang Melayu Sarawak, integrating traditional drumming, pantun, and mukun, presented in the colourful spirit of Aidilfitri.

A highlight of the celebration was the ceremonial cutting of the “Kek Palak Meja”, a cherished Sarawakian tradition symbolising unity and prosperity during Hari Raya celebrations.
