Google ending updates, remote control for 1st & 2nd gen Nest Learning Thermostats

Later this year, Google will stop supporting the 1st and 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat. This will result in a trio of changes, though Google is offering upgrade discounts to existing owners.

The first Nest thermostats date back to 2011, with a 2nd gen coming in 2012. Google says it “has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware.”

Starting October 25, 2025, the following three models will stop receiving software updates:

These older models have smaller 1.8-inch screens (compared to the 3rd gen’s 3.25-inch). You can check the Nest app to confirm.

While users will still be able to “adjust the temperature, mode, schedules, and settings” directly on the thermostat, they will no longer be able to control them remotely from the Nest and Home app on their phone or Google Assistant. Home/Away Assist and other connected features will also stop working. 

There are no changes to other Nest thermostats, with Google adding the ability to create and adjust schedules for those models in the Google Home app “later this year.”

Google is offering impacted owners a $130 discount in the US to purchase a 4th gen Nest Learning Thermostat ($279.99). Those in Canada are being offered a $160 discount (MSRP $379.99). In Europe, the offer is 50% off the Tado Smart Thermostat X – Starter Kit, which offers Google Home support.
